General

Ohana produces high-quality ukuleles that don't require you to break the bank. They offer a wide range of products for both beginners and more advanced players. The TKS-15-E is an electro-acoustic tenor ukulele, made of durable mahogany to give it a bright, open sound. This tenor string instrument features a slimline design and is fitted with a passive pickup. Simply plug the ukulele in and your playing will be amplified. Furthermore, thanks to its geared tuners, it won't soon go out of tune, and the fretboard and bridge are also made of a durable wood type: rosewood. It even comes with Aquila strings. All in all, this is a top-quality yet surprisingly affordable instrument that is sure to please.

The ukulele: a portable, affordable and globally popular instrument

In 1879, the ukulele was brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants. While most people associate the uke directly with Hawaiian music, the instrument became increasingly popular in various other parts of the world - especially the US - between the First and Second World Wars. The ukulele quickly became an icon of the jazz age, and in the 1920s, more and more professional and amateur musicians began discovering the instrument. People began sharing chords and tabs of songs that were popular at the time, which were eventually published as sheet music. Although the guitar eventually took over from the ukulele during the rock 'n' roll days, the portable and affordable uke gained popularity once again during the 90s. And this time, its popularity hasn't waned.

This is an early review about this ukulele because I have only used it acoustically and not through an amp. When I first chose it, one of my reasons was because the body was slim-lined. Having used it now, I am not sure that this was such a good idea because my other ukes have normal depth bodies. So this aspect of its design will need some getting used to. The quality of the instrument is great. The solid wood enhances its tenor sound and the chosen strings also enhance its playability. It has a solid feel throughout and it looks smart.

I regret to say that I should have done more research before buying this model because I have since read that the passive pickup inside this model is likely to amplify all the sounds generated on the sound board i.e. back rubbed against clothes, fingers - and not just from tapping/plucking the strings. As this use ukulele was chosen specially because it had an electric pick-up I am not so keen to go out and spend money on an amp. I will test it first on someone else's amp. Unfortunately this is my only electro acoustic guitar and I don't really want to go out and look for another one to take its place. Apart from aspect the TKS-15E sounds and works fine acoustically. Time will only tell whether this is Ohana ukulele deserves a "5 star" or "3 star." I have chosen "4 stars" for now.
