General
The soprano ukulele is the smallest in the ukulele family, that is why Fender have named this Ukulele U'Uku, after the Hawaiian word for 'small'. Despite its size, this instrument has a great sound that it owes to its full-mahogany construction and a braced top for more clarity and punch. Its high-tuned, bright tones are characteristic to traditional Hawaiian music. The instrument receives increased attention among pop musicians with the help of Jake Shimabukuro, who had a sensational Youtube hit, 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'.
About the ukulele
The Hawaiians have given the instrument the moniker 'jumping flea', not a very charming name for an instrument that is so much fun to play. It were Portuguese immigrants that first brought the machete (the ukulele's predecessor) to Hawaii, where it became the ukulele we know and love today. The ukulele is a valuable ingredient for any large arrangement, as it clearly cuts through the mix. This small instrument has great potential!
