The Yamaha SEQTRAK is a portable little synth that gives you more options than you might expect upon first glance. It's clearly aimed at producers, composers and musicians that are always on the move, and definitely fits the age of the smart device we're in currently living in.

Back in the day, 'portable' gear simply referred to slimmed-down gear that had nowhere near as much to offer as bits of kit that weren't designed to be lugged around. Fortunately, times have changed. The SEQTRAK hooks you up with eleven tracks, including seven drum tracks, two AWM2 synth tracks, a DX track and a sampler track. On top of that, you're set up with a solid stack of effects, a sequencer, an arpeggiator, a 24-bit/44.1 kHz, stereo USB audio interface, and USB-MIDI. The sample-based AWM2-engine powers many Yamaha synths and keyboards and boasts over 2,000 sounds and a 128-voice polyphony, while the DX engine is an 8-voice/4-operator FM engine. In other words: options a-plenty!

And There's More

Over on the right, the SEQTRAK has been outfitted with a streamlined sound-tweaking section. Over on the left, you're looking at two rows of eight sequencer steps - just enough to label it an x0x-style lay-out. In terms of sampling, you get a built-in microphone as well as a built-in speaker so you don't have to fuss with an external speaker. Lastly, the AWM2 engine spares several hundred MBs worth of storage capacity for custom waves, so what are you waiting for?

Wrote the following about Yamaha SEQTRAK OR Synthesizer

Fijne sequencer! Is intuïtief in gebruik, zeker voor beginners. Je kan meteen aan de slag met muziek maken en de tutorials van de Seqtrak app zijn geweldig goed. Binnen no time heb je iets staan wat vol en gelaagd klinkt.
Als minpuntjes zou ik geven:
De toetsen zijn te plastic en hebben geen velocity sense.
Er is geen scherm dus je hebt in het begin zeker de app steeds nodig om wegwijs te worden in het apparaat.
De bouw kwaliteit is wel heel plasticy.

Overall een synthesizer om snel veel plezier mee te hebben met een grote database aan rijke en diepe synthesizer geluiden en mooie samples. Ik denk wel dat ik al gauw een midi keyboard zal kopen om tracks wat makkelijker in te spelen.

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.

NAMM 2016: Back to the '80s with Electro Harmonix

Late last year, Electro Harmonix introduced the Crash Pad Analog Drum Synth, and at NAMM 2016 they'll be unleashing the Super Space Drum. Where the Crash Pad creates electronic cymbal sounds, the Space Drum generates a typically '80s drum sound - electronic yet warm and full of character. It can be used as either a standalone unit, or in combination with a looper or clock generator, for instance.
