Yamaha Motif XF7 WH: keyboard and sounds

Just like you'd expect from a top-notch workstation, the Motif XF7 offers amazing comfort. The FSX keyboard with Initial Touch and aftertouch might not be weighted, but it still has a lovely feel to it. It also has a nice range of 76 keys, which is an improvement on the standard 61 keys, so the keyboardists have the freedom to play more expansive parts. To add to that, you also have an impressive 741 MB worth of sounds at your disposal, which includes a vast assortment of instruments that are reproduced with great detail. The AWM2 sample technology with Expanded Articulation ensures a natural sound, so you can enjoy the full glory of Yamaha's S6 and CFIII grand pianos, as well.

VCM effects and digital integration

Good sounds are a must, but they really come to life with the DSP effects, which sound just as great. Yamaha has always been strong when it comes to effects, but the virtual Circuitry Modeling effects featured in the Motif really have that high-grade sound of studio plugins. Moreover, most of the effects have been edited in great detail, so the sound that you hear in your head is easy to produce with the Motif. Furthermore, the XF6 WH is equipped with a Remote Control function, so it can be fully integrated with your DAW. It's compatible with Cubase, Sonar, ProTools, Logic and Digital Performer, so you can use the various faders and rotary knobs to control the software functions. Perfect for studio use. With this anniversary edition, Yamaha offers everything and more for the modern professional keyboard player.

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.

NAMM 2016: Back to the '80s with Electro Harmonix

Tuesday 12 January 2016

Late last year, Electro Harmonix introduced the Crash Pad Analog Drum Synth, and at NAMM 2016 they'll be unleashing the Super Space Drum. Where the Crash Pad creates electronic cymbal sounds, the Space Drum generates a typically '80s drum sound - electronic yet warm and full of character. It can be used as either a standalone unit, or in combination with a looper or clock generator, for instance.
