General

Yamaha present pianists with extensive, richly expressive and far-reaching sound in the tight form of the MODX8 synthesizer, alongside the full support of an 88-note GHS keyboard. Each key mimics the weighted hammer-response of an acoustic piano to ensure an authentic and dynamic playing feel and is the result of 125 years of piano building experience, while inside this instrument, lies the result of 40 years spent developing and building potent synthesizers.

The MODX8: Classic Meets Modern

Under the hood of this powerful yet pianist-friendly synthesizer, lies the full-force of the AWM2 (Advanced Wave Memory 2) sample and synthesis engine, able to generate sounds including drums and acoustic instruments with faithful precision. Next to that, lies the FM-X (Frequency Modulation) that can create the definitive sound of contemporary electronic music as if from thin air. Everything, from the sounds to the built-in effects and filters, is smoothly and intuitively navigated, steered and tweaked via a 7-inch touchscreen and a bank of tactile controllers. This mash-up of two worlds comes complete with a PC and Mac compatible copy of Steinberg Cubase AI.

Great all rounder keyboard with almost infinite possibilities: available sounds, powerfull arpegiator, modulation, layering, scenes, connectivity, etc. Although not the best Yamaha keybed, 88 notes is a real bonus for pianists. Some might dislike it, but I got used to its keybed relative sponginess compared to my clp675.

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.

NAMM 2016: Back to the '80s with Electro Harmonix

Tuesday 12 January 2016

Late last year, Electro Harmonix introduced the Crash Pad Analog Drum Synth, and at NAMM 2016 they'll be unleashing the Super Space Drum. Where the Crash Pad creates electronic cymbal sounds, the Space Drum generates a typically '80s drum sound - electronic yet warm and full of character. It can be used as either a standalone unit, or in combination with a looper or clock generator, for instance.
