Even if you wouldn't know where to begin, having a Roland Fantom 08 set up in front of you is truly something else. Countless controls and a huge display immediately make it clear that this is not a toy keyboard but a hugely professional synthesizer loaded with real weighted keys. Even with software on the rise, many musicians feel like a stage-ready synth like the Fantom thankfully still beats a laptop loaded with virtual instruments.

The sound of this imposing machine is sculpted by the ZEN Core engine, which puts no less than 256 oscillators/voices at your disposal. This means that keeping things simple results in a polyphony of 256 while shaping more complex or layered sounds will lower the number of available voices. It's also easy to keep track of what's going on thanks to the numerous controls and the 5.5" display, and to finish, you're getting the Roland SuperNATURAL engine and the option to add expansions via the Roland Cloud.

Other Highlights

Roland have also built-in two gigabytes of storage capacity so you can sample away, playing the keyboard and the pads. Meanwhile, the MIDI-compatible audio interface of the Fantom 08 supports a smooth link-up with your computer, and there's a multi-track pattern sequencer you can use to create grooves. What also shouldn't go unmentioned is the gigantic stack of included effects, plus a vocoder you can use with your line microphone to brilliantly bizarre effect. Add it all up and it's safe to say this synth will take a fair amount of time to get to know in depth - as it should.

Wrote the following about Roland Fantom-08 Synthesizer

Ik heb tijdens de Corona-periode de Piano herondekt met een Roland FP-10. Al gauw kreeg ik behoefte aan meer geluiden en stapte over naar de Roland RD-88. Dit apparaat inspireerde mij zoveel dat ik bij elk geluid nieuwe patronen maakte die ik graag tot songs wilde samenvoegen. Helaas moest ik daarvoor telkens een computer aansluiten waardoor veel ideeën verloren gingen. Uiteindelijk ben ik uitgekomen bij de Roland Fantom 08 en dit is echt een instrument waar je niet af kan blijven. Het opslaan van patronen (loops) gaat echt super eenvoudig en ik kan al mijn ideeën opslaan en later bewerken. Hoewel Ableton volledig te integreren is met de Fantom 08 heb ik zelden de behoefte aan een DAW op de computer gehad. De geluiden zijn vrijwel onbeperkt en over het algemeen erg goed. Het toetsenbord voelt geweldig (al mijn Rolands hebben hetzelfde PHA-4 toetsenbord) maar geeft af en toe wel wat extra geluid, dat meestal ook weer verdwijnt. Dit schijnt te maken te hebben met de smering van de toetsen. Ik heb hier het minste last van gehad met de Roland FP-10. Jammer is wel dat Roland zijn goede pianogeluiden (inclusief string en sympathetic resonance) reserveert voor zijn digitale piano's. Ook zijn de pianogeluiden via bijgeleverde apps op de digitale piano's beter en uitgebreider te editten. Hierdoor blijft Roland qua pianogeluid op de Fantom 08 achter bij de concurrenten en doet het zichzelf en zijn consumenten tekort. Toch denk ik dat je qua prijs/kwaliteitsverhouding geen beter en veelzijdiger instrument zult vinden. Vandaar de 5 sterren.

Wrote the following about Roland Fantom-08 Synthesizer

In de loop van de jaren meerdere piano’s en synths getest waaronder enkele topmodellen. Geen enkele kon me op langere termijn echt overtuigen. Sommige waren best goed maar dan moest je een klein fortuin investeren om nog klanken bij te kopen, soms had je externe software nodig, dan weer was de dynamiek niet behoorlijk. Bij de Phantom 08 blijf ik klanken ontdekken die warm en dynamisch zijn. Soms mellow, soms overal doorheen snijdend. Of het nu Piano of synth is, ik blijf soms te lang aan de piano zitten genieten. Je kan klanken toevoegen maar het moet niet. Wat er in zit is zeer goed. Vroeger was het eerder gefrustreerd zoeken naar redelijke klanken. Nu is het zalig thuiskomen. Ook als je op weg moet is het een zeer goed draagbaar ding en toch een heel goed klavier. Dank je wel Roland! Dit is een blijver.

Ik was al langere tijd op zoek naar een goede stage piano waar in elk geval een bak degelijke pianogeluiden in zitten én waar ik liefst ook veel breder mee uit de voeten zou kunnen, thuis bij het maken van composities. Ik had mijn oog op de Roland RD2000, maar die is al wat jaartjes oud en behoorlijk zwaar. Ook de Yamaha CP88 kwam in aanmerking, maar is toch wat beperkt in aantal geluiden en DAW mogelijkheden. Ik had ooit een Roland FA06, maar dat was het toch net niet waardoor ik de FA08 heb laten liggen.

En ineens was daar Roland met de FA 08. Eigenlijk is deze bak een flinke upgrade van de FA serie, waardoor ie zich qua functionaliteit kan meten met de RD2000. En hij heeft een touch screen wat de interfacing een stuk sneller en intuïtiever maakt. Dit is een workstation waar ik mee uit de voeten kan! De toetsen zullen door toppianisten niet als de beste in hun soort worden gezien, maar ik vind ze alleszins prima. Goede gewogen actie en toch voldoende soepel voor het snellere werk. Om de synth goed te kunnen beheersen, moet je wel even de handleiding in of geduldig zelf door de interface heen oefenen. Maar al snel kom je een heel eind. En met net geen 15 kilo, kan ie ook vrij makkelijk worden verplaatst.

Voor mij, na een lange zoektocht, is de de Fantom 08 een uitkomst.

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.
