General

The Roland A-01K synthesizer/controller with keyboard is essentially the A-01 controller combined with the K-25m keyboard from the Boutique series. CV, gate-out, MIDI (in/out), USB MicroB (MIDI) and Bluetooth LE connectors expand your range of possibilities. CV/gate in particular is handy for operating modular systems. The A-01 is more than just a controller, however. It can also be used to generate sounds. While today's equipment uses plenty of memory and processing power, the A-01 keeps things simple. Its synth engine has an 8-bit CPU and just 8 kb of memory!

Possibilities

There's an oscillator, a filter, an envelope generator, an amplifer and an LFO at your disposal for making sounds. The oscillator has sawtooth, block, pulse and noise waveforms, while the LFO offers sine, triangle, sawtooth and random waveforms. For such a compact machine, the display is a good size that clearly shows the parameters that can be changed using the large rotary knobs below. The Eurorack series by Roland (the System 500) is ideal for use with the A-01K, as are other CV based products. Its compact dimensions make the A-01K perfect for mobile producers.

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.
