General

Vintage or contemporary, anyone who has the pleasure of playing around with hardware synthesizers should know that these hunks of fun have already been around for half a century. Naturally, any synth from the dawn of electronically generated sound is now an antique and comes with a matching antique price-tag. While demanding a somewhat eye-watering price, this 100% hand-built, hand-wired, Moog-made and utterly faithful replica of their 1971-vintage Model 10 offers all the age and character of genuine modular synthesis in a case. With this kind of synthesizer, nothing is going to happen until it's dripping with patch cables; until the architecture is routed and designed to taste and then, only then, can you start the delicious task of tweaking.

The Timeless Features of the Moog Model 10

The built-in modules of the Model 10 offer precisely the level of potential and renowned sound that you would expect. You already know the sound from Wendy Carlos, Isao Tomita and countless others which is fine, since there's so much character leaking all over the place already and this is exactly why it's so desperately coveted by any self-respecting synth-freak. It's worth the small reminder that, although lovingly built by hand now, this instrument was first built back in 1971. All of the above goes some way to explain the enormous price this chunk of essential sonic history is going for and, if you are one of the aforementioned synth-freaks, you might already be eyeing up what you can sell to raise enough cash to get your hands on one. We understand. So are we.

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.
