General

Modal Electronics' 002R is a rack synthesizer packed with possibilities. Internally, it's the same as the 002 model that has a keyboard and it has the same beautiful 4.3-inch display too. It's a subtractive synthesizer with twelve voices and two oscillators per voice. Each oscillator also has a sub oscillator essentially giving you four per voice. The sub oscillators can take the same waveform as the main oscillator or have a traditional square wave. The 24 dB filter is special too: it can morph from four pole to band pass to one pole 6 dB per octave and everything in between. There are also two syncable LFOs, one per voice and a global one. This top-quality synth will undoubtedly find a central place in any professional studio or live setup.

There's also a parameter sequencer and an extensive arpeggiator on board. Other highlights include support for MPE (for polyphonic expression) and a web interface for operation via a browser. In addition to standard MIDI, there's also USB-MIDI host that allows you to connect a USB device, like a MIDI controller, without a computer. The 002R even has XLR/jack combo outputs!

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.
