General

This is the more compact, rack-friendly edition of the Korg Wavestate MK2 synthesizer. The Wavestate Module takes up just 4U of rack space, boasts increased polyphony and extensive sound-design options. The polyphony of the Korg Wavestate Module has been pushed up to 120, giving you more space to play than the 96-voice polyphony of the keyboard edition, so if you're more than happy with your keyboard and you're just looking for a powerful engine to back everything up, this is the synth you've been seeking.

The Features of Korg Wavestate Module

Besides the trimmed down module design and increased polyphony, this synth brings all of the same features, controls and functions as the OG Wavestate MK2. If you're not already familiar with the Wavestate legacy, here's a quick summary: in times gone by, sample synthesizers weren't that big, maybe a few ROM samples, a few megabytes at the most. So the samples from that time (we're talking the late eighties) didn't exactly sound very lively. To counter this, the Korg Wavestation was able to place several samples in a row, with crossfades in between and many other adjustable parameters, resulting in a sound that actually lives and evolves in real-time. This kind of sound quickly became popular in genres like techno and New Age.

The Wavestate

While there are plenty of synthesizers out there that all do something slightly different, they all tend to come with a pretty similar spec sheet. With that in mind, the Wavestate is a pretty unique instrument, especially since it can be directly traced all the way back to the original Wavestation and also shares a lot of its DNA with eye-wateringly expensive synths like the Oasys and Kronos. This model brings everything you would want from a synth: a fast fistful of filters, a hefty modulation matrix and plenty of effects. So, if you're a die-hard sound designer looking for something special that keeps things modern while looking back to the vintage golden age, this is definitely it.

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.
