General

Loaded with mechanical instead of analogue or digital oscillators, the Gamechanger Audio Motor Synth MKII is truly something else. More specifically, this unique synthesizer comes equipped with eight little DC motors that generate sound with the help of IR sensors and electromagnetic pickups. While not exactly mainstream, the Motor Synth boasts three deeply unique voices that can be tightly steered in any sonic direction.

The Gamechanger Audio Motor Synth MKII: The First Electro-Mechanical Synthesizer Ever

Since spinning oscillators alone isn't enough for fresh sounds, the Motor Synth MKII also sets you up with multi-filters, envelopes, LFOs, motion-sequencing and more. The built-in motors serve up sine, saw and square waves plus an M-waveform generated by electromagnetic pickups planted at the base of each motor. Also, while this is the world's first electro-mechanical synth, its flashing lights and moving parts are by no means gimmicky as, ultimately, this singular synthesizer may just give adventurous sound-sculptors exactly what they've been searching for.

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.

NAMM 2016: Back to the '80s with Electro Harmonix

Tuesday 12 January 2016

Late last year, Electro Harmonix introduced the Crash Pad Analog Drum Synth, and at NAMM 2016 they'll be unleashing the Super Space Drum. Where the Crash Pad creates electronic cymbal sounds, the Space Drum generates a typically '80s drum sound - electronic yet warm and full of character. It can be used as either a standalone unit, or in combination with a looper or clock generator, for instance.
