General

Designed and built by the renowned Sweden-based boffins of Elektron, the Digitone is an eight-voice polyphonic desktop synth that blends the scope of FM-synthesis with the signal flow of subtractive synthesis to open up a universe of sound. FM synthesis has a bad rep simply because it can be so hard to work with, but thanks to the thoughtful work of Elektron and via a clearly laid out control panel, you're in great hands. Via the cleverly structured menus accessed via the crystal-clear OLED display screen, you'll find every parameter and function lies within easy reach - whether you're building sounds from the ground up or playing with some of the solid ready-made presets.

The Elektron Digitone: The Right Sound

With the Digitone, you're able to immediately start stacking 16-step sequences and, thanks to an endless list of setting options, each step in your sequence can be fine-tuned to shape as organic and bespoke a sound as possible. This can involved carefully tweaking specific parameters of every FM algorithm, by applying the insanely good sounding effects that come built in, or by meticulously placing each step using the surgical micro-timing tool - or, of course, all of the above.

Modern Synthesis

The Digitone essentially represents the future of FM-synthesis according to Elektron. Via the combined forces of FM synthesis and the classic signal flow of subtractive synthesis, you can quickly find the sound you're after, whether it's a richly woven sonic tapestry or a formidable brick-wall of delicious noise. Since the Digitone is such a modern vision of what a desktop synth should be, it comes with all the connection ports required for seamless integration, including extensive MIDI control options and Overbridge tech, which enables this revolution in a box to operate as a DAW plugin.

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.
