General

Don't be fooled by the compact size of this analogue modular synthesizer—it may be limited in functions, but the Dreadbox Erebus V2 offers a lot more than you might think. This Grecian synth offers two analogue oscillators (saw/block and saw/triangle), each with its own adjustable portamento, octave and tuning. It also features a 12dB filter, an AR envelope for the VCA, and a more general ADSR envelope. All in all, the Erebus V2 with its desirable wooden side panels is sure to please.

Dreadbox Erebus V2 features

While this synthesizer isn't anything new or particularly ground-breaking, it possesses some extra pizazz that sets it apart from the rest, such as an echo which you can modulate using a time parameter. You've got a patch panel on the right side for hooking the audio source up to the destination—envelope to filter, LFO to pulse width, it's up to you. In short, this synthesizer has a lot more to offer than meets the eye.

Interaction

The Erebus (the Greek word for 'darkness') is a desirable device, but what if you want more? One option would be to use the input to send an external signal to the filter. Another would be to use CV connections to drive other CV-based modular systems. Polychaining is a possibility too; four Erebus synthesizers can be combined to produce one polyphonic system, for instance. The inner-workings of the Erebus also deserve some attention when it comes to interaction. The two oscillators can play either paraphonic or in unison.

Dreadbox Erebus V2 modular analogue synthesizer
Wrote the following about Dreadbox Erebus V2 modular analogue synthesizer
Ontzettend dik geluid!

Oftewel, geweldig!

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.

NAMM 2016: Back to the '80s with Electro Harmonix

Tuesday 12 January 2016

Late last year, Electro Harmonix introduced the Crash Pad Analog Drum Synth, and at NAMM 2016 they'll be unleashing the Super Space Drum. Where the Crash Pad creates electronic cymbal sounds, the Space Drum generates a typically '80s drum sound - electronic yet warm and full of character. It can be used as either a standalone unit, or in combination with a looper or clock generator, for instance.
