General
The Nord Lead 4 is an innovative 4-part multi-timbral synthesizer with 49 touch-sensitive keys. All four of the sounds can be routed to their own output and edited via an expansive filter and effects section. Along with the classic analogue sound waves, the Nordlead 4 also has a Wavetable mode with unique Formant wavetables. With the True Voice mode, you can stack up to four oscillators to create leads and pads with the True Voice Unison mode.
Nord Lead 4: Filters
Compared with the Nord Lead 2X, you'll find a number of new filter types and on-board effects. Along with the traditional low-pass (12/24dB), high-pass and band-pass filters, you can also choose from two transistor and ladder filters for a wonderfully extreme sound. There are seven programmable variations per sound at your disposal, and you can apply your chosen filter values in real-time using the rotary dials. You can even sync the filters with your sequencer.
Effects
Once you've set everything up, you can then fine-tune the sound per part via the expansive effects section of the the Nord Lead 4. For this, you have the choice of the following effects: bit-crusher, talk and distortion, reverb and delay.

Toen ik op zoek was naar een goede synthesizer om wat meer structureel muziek mee te maken samen met een vriend, was ik in eerste instantie aan het kijken naar een access virus of een DSI prophet 12. Na beide geprobeerd te hebben in de winkel was ik nog niet overtuigd. Toen heb ik voor de gein even gespeeld op een NL4 en het geluid heeft me gelijk weggeblazen, dit was the synthesizer die ik wilde.
Het programmeren van de NL4 is zo eenvoudig, dat het maken van nieuwe sounds slechts minuten tot seconden duurt. Het morphen tussen diverse klanken via de impulse morph of de mod wheel maakt deze synth superkrachtig tijdens live gebruik of een goede jamsessie. En de unison functie zorgt ervoor dat je er extra 'vette' geluiden uit kunt persen, precies waar ik van hou.
Ik zou deze synthesizer enorm aanraden als je van spelen/performen houdt (heet ook niet voor niets een performance synthesizer), live komt hij echt tot zijn recht. Ik gebruik hem bijna iedere week om te jammen.
Voor een sound designer is de engine misschien iets te eenvoudig, er is competitie die veel dieper gaat (bijvoorbeeld de DSI pro2) en veel meer modulatie opties biedt, maar dan wordt het programmeren ook gelijk een stuk ingewikkelder. De eenvoudige workflow van de NL4 zijn een groot pluspunt.
Ik had zelf erg graag een audio ingang gehad die te mixen is met de output, dit zou mij bij live/jamming een hoop geneuzel schelen, aangezien ik vaak mijn ipad of een drumcomputer mee neem voor drums. Mijn Roland Juno G heeft wel een audio in (maar dit is dan ook een workstation).
Een aantal mensen valt over de kwaliteit van de toetsen op de NL4, ze zouden wat plastic achtig zijn en niet zo 'degelijk' als andere boards. Ik vind het erg meevallen en ik vind juist de lichte aanslag perfect passen bij mijn speelstijl. Ik vlieg graag over de toetsen heen door mijn vingers heen en weer te bewegen over het keyboard en dit gaat op de NL4 zeer makkelijk. Ik heb ook niet het idee dat de toetsen het snel zullen begeven.
Ik kan de NL4 dus zeker aanraden, probeer er 1 in de winkel en kijk wat youtube videos om jezelf te overtuigen!

Nog een laatste opmerking, wat me vaak opvalt aan Bax-shop (en andere muziekzaken) is dat ze deze synthesizer zogenaamd afgeprijsd hebben van 2200 euro. Bij mijn wete is het apparaat nooit voor die prijs over de toonbank gegaan. Toen ik hem kocht meer dan 2 jaar terug was hij ook al rond de 1800. Ik vind het een beetje suf dat ze deze tactiek van nep-afprijzen blijven hanteren.
