General

Many moons ago, the company Sequential Circuits was established by Dave Smith. Alongside so many diverse classics such as the Prophet-5, the company produced the Pro-1. It was a compact analogue mono-synthesizer that went on to become ridiculously popular. Now, many moons later, Behringer releases an exact recreation of this synthesizer. The Behringer Pro-1 is a monophonic desktop module built for use with a MIDI keyboard or MIDI source. It is an extensive module, in terms of both sound and possibilities. It's intuitive to use allowing you to routinely, quickly and purposefully build a sound from nothing. This is a 100% hands-on approach to sound design and it works! The Behringer Pro-1 has two oscillators, an external input, a filter with its own envelope and a volume envelope. This gives you multiple modulation options alongside a simple sequencer and an arpeggiator. Anyone new to desktop modules will get the hang of it in no time since there are no mistakes with the Pro-1. It's fair to say that Behringer have made a faithful recreation of a classic!

This is my second analog synth, after a little MAM MB32, so not an expert on the topic of synths, but I've been totally floored by the noises coming out of this one (once I'd finally figured how to make it produce an actual sound). I'm only just getting started with it - there's a seemingly endless amount of different tones and effects you can make with it, it's ridiculous. Very steep learning curve though - the manual is bare bones - so you'll need to consult some basic guides on subtractive synthesis.

I used to be a real synth snob, had a big studio of all analogue equipment, drum machines, outboard etc. In my eyes nothing could beat it. I was constantly sending vintage equipment for repairs and it was always stunting my workflow. I bought this as my pro one transformer died and took quite a rare part out with it. The cost of repair cost around the same price as this synth and so I took the jump. Can not believe how good it is for the money this has literally made me do a u turn on my views of synths. I have since purchased more behringer synths and selling off the originals, this has made me come to my senses so much it is unreal. All this time synth snobbery was my ego and getting in the way of creativity. Behringer have really knocked it out of the park with all of these and shown us all that vintage analogue synths really are the most overpriced expensive pieces of plastic. Honestly this has changed my whole outlook. Thankyou so much.

Verder goed product.

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.
