General

The Behringer Neutron is a paraphonic semi-modular synthesizer with a fully analogue circuit. Its innovative design gives you an analogue signal path that's based on a legendary VCO for truly authentic sounds. The Neutron offers a wide range of connection possibilities that includes a 32 in/24 out jack matrix and MIDI I/O. Patching isn't required, however, as the Neutron has default routings that allow you to use it right away. This makes it suitable for beginners as well as more advanced users who love to experiment with sounds.

Under the Neutron Bonnet

The two 3340 analogue oscillators at the heart of the Neutron pack plenty of fierce potential when it comes to producing a wide array of sounds. The waveforms can be seamlessly blended to create entirely fresh combinations and something truly unique. In paraphonic mode, the oscillators can be used independently, easing quick sound switching during gigs, and each sound can be sculpted in further detail using individual pulse width/tone modulation controls.

Analogue Delay, Overdrive and Noise Generating

The Neutron has a multi-step analogue delay on board that's based on iconic BBD (Bucket Brigade Delay) technology alongside an analogue overdrive circuit able to add extra warmth and edge. The waveform generator provides deep control over the shape of what it produces for free and full-on experimentation, while the LFO offers five waveforms in all, as well as MIDI clock sync and key sync.

Super happy with neutron. Also got surprised as there were patch leads included!
(I read reviews that they not)
Great to start with modulars!.
Only concerning is Behringer policy of stealing other companies works but that another story. Also if not that we prop won't have it so cheap.

The synth and other items arrived as scheduled with no problem. It is true that Win 10 needs a USB upgrade using Zadig but it was fairly painless to do. The biggest Plus here is that BAX are considerably cheaper than other online music shops. I saved £32 compared to gear4music and GAK - absolutely brilliant and I highly recommend. Thanks BAX.

Arrived quickly, on the day predicted.

I would have given 5 stars if I hadn't had a problem with the unit (though not Bax's fault).

Initially I could only get (white) noise from the back output & headphone jacks. OSC1, OSC2 & OSCMIX outs on the patchbay all worked fine. The issue was fixed by upgrading to firmware v2.02. This isn't an easy process for a Win10 user as Behringer don't supply the required USB driver for the Neutron. You need to download and install Zadig2.4 from zadig.akeo.ie

Under the Options dropdown select 'List All Devices' - then select

STM32 Bootloader the click Replace/install Driver. Mine failed first time and succeeded after a reboot. See youtube.com/watch?v=2-MbByoXPCk

After installing the driver the Windows Neutron app worked, as did the firmware upgrade - both from the Behringer site.

Anyway the Neutron now sounds great - hope this helps...

I love analogue synths. I cut my teeth many moons ago on EMS (Synthi AKS) and ARP (2600) and nothing can match the versatility and power of true, patchable analogue. The little Neutron is a hugely impressive 21st Century breath of fresh air. It really does everything a patchbay analogue synth should do. Subtle, ambient tones. Screaming avant-garde sounds. Beautiful bass tones. Experimental soundscapes. On the fly manipulation of input audio (to midi sync if you fancy). All of the power of modular in a little, affordable box. If you have any interest in hands-on, patching and tweaking sound then how can you resist!

You may have read reviews which point out a few ‘problems’ with the Neutron. The delay. The overdrive. Don’t worry. You can patch around these if you need to but actually, a few little eccentricities give the Neutron a bit of classic character and can actually work for you. The colour. The red. I have to admit I was a little worried here but it isn’t actually primary gloss red at all. It is more subtle in the flesh than in the review pictures and videos and I wouldn't change it at all. The build quality is good and it feels solid with excellent smooth pots, essential for this kind of synth.

My Neutron arrived promptly and well boxed from Bax Music. It sits well with Ableton Live and I have added some rather tasty Neutronics to a couple of tracks which always needed that unfathomable something. I have had enormous fun with it. I think I may be having enormous fun with it for a long while yet!

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.

NAMM 2016: Back to the '80s with Electro Harmonix

Tuesday 12 January 2016

Late last year, Electro Harmonix introduced the Crash Pad Analog Drum Synth, and at NAMM 2016 they'll be unleashing the Super Space Drum. Where the Crash Pad creates electronic cymbal sounds, the Space Drum generates a typically '80s drum sound - electronic yet warm and full of character. It can be used as either a standalone unit, or in combination with a looper or clock generator, for instance.
