General

As the name suggests, Arturia's MiniBrute II is the follow-up to the legendary original. Piling on even more options, this affordable synth takes the analogue revolution a few steps further than the first edition and is now fully compatible with other gear, including Euroracks, modular synthesizers and effects pedals. While it's definitely souped-up, Arturia have retained all of the best bits of the original MiniBrute, so sound-designers can still count on pure analogue sound that can be warped, bent, twisted and sculpted at will.

The Arturia MiniBrute II

The MiniBrute II is astoundingly easy to operate and has definitely been set up to support experimental work. The clean and clear layout is so intuitive that even entry-level sound-designers are able to get to grips with this synth-based box of magic. Advanced synth-heads are also offered plenty to drool over, since they're treated to a 48 CV mod matrix as well as Eurorack compatibility, so the MiniBrute II can be hooked up via CV, MIDI or USB, and synced with a drum machine to serve as the analogue core of a fully-grown sonic ecosystem.

Inspiring Synthesis

The Arturia MiniBrute 2 is equipped with two oscillators, a classic Steiner Parker filter and an innovative looping envelope complete with full parameter controls. A Keystep-style sequencer/arpeggiator is supplied for stacking and creating virtually limitless sounds, and even if you have no clue where to begin, the MiniBrute II comes with a Preset Cookbook that'll get you up to speed within an evening.

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.
