General

The ARP Odyssey made a name for itself in the seventies after artists like ABBA, Ultravox, Chick Corea, Vangelis and Elton John used it in their hit songs. KORG has reissued the ARP Odyssey in collaboration with original ARP designer David Friend. This ARP Odyssey Module Rev1 is a desktop version with a vintage white finish and colourful buttons on the faders. With this machine, you can produce more than just retro sounds—you can create a totally unique retro vibe!

ARP Odyssey: a true hero

Besides the "Iliad", the famous Greek writer Homer also wrote the book "The Odyssey", which allows the reader to follow the adventures of the heroic Odysseus as he lives his glory days after the Trojan War. The ARP adopted the name Odyssey for a reason. This super-hero analogue monophonic/duophonic synth produces two VCOs, pink and white noise, LFO, an ADSR envelope generator, sample & hold, and a low-pass filter. If you're specifically looking for the sounds of a first or a second generation ARP, look on further—the Odyssey Module has all three generations in one. It also features three white pressure-sensitive buttons that function as pitch and modulation control, portamento fader, and transposition switch.

New and improved

Despite the fact that this module doesn't have a keyboard, this device is an honest-to-goodness ARP Odyssey. An ADSR envelope generator on the right makes intuitive fine-tuning your sound progression possible. Under the bonnet, there's a 4-pin low-pass filter that sounds a lot fatter than the 2-pin variety in the original Odyssey from 1972. The Rev1 Module is also equipped with a MIDI IN and a USB port, plus any other connections you'd expect on a synth, including a balanced XLR output. KORG has generously included patch cables and an adapter, so you can get started right away with the ARP Odyssey Module Rev1 analogue synthesizer!

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.
