General

The full-size American-made ARP Odyssey FS Rev 1 analogue synthesizer is finally available to musicians around the world! This remake of a classic analogue synth has been released before on a slightly smaller scale. This time, the ARP Odyssey FS is full-scale with standard-size keys and the vintage-style faders and switches just like the original!

Synthese with the ARP Odyssey FS Rev 1

The ARP Odyssey is a subtractive analogue synthesizer. Its two oscillators (VCO) and noise-oscillator are sent through a filter and work together to determine the basis of the sound spectrum that the Odyssey produces. A VCA takes care of the amplification and an ADSR or AR envelope is responsible for the short tones, long tones, and everything in between. As well as three Low-Pass types, there's also a High-Pass filter for making extremely heavy sounds (with lots of mid-low) significantly milder and more consistent in loudness.

Operation

This synth looks and acts exactly like the vintage Odyssey, but the presence of a USB port betrays its actual age. It features the same perks as the original; the keys are not velocity sensitive and do not have aftertouch, but this is ideal for the kind of music this device is designed to create. Famous artists like ABBA, UltraVOX, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, and Elton John among others put the Odyssey on the map years ago. It's a synth that's designed for fast programming and offers a fully-analogue sound. Its characteristic shrill, biting sound is adored by many. In short, if you can't afford a second-hand original, this is your chance to own an authentic, full-scale ARP Odyssey synth!

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.

It can be used as either a standalone unit, or in combination with a looper or clock generator, for instance.
