General

The Studiologic Numa Compact 2x digital piano has three audio sources, a piano section with 1 GB of samples, a tone wheel organ and a synth section with Sledge samples. On the housing, there are nine physical drawbars for both the synth and organ sounds. What's more, you can use the Numa Compact 2x as a MIDI controller, and thanks to the audio over USB functionality, it can also be connected directly to your computer or tablet so you can send files directly to your device or play tracks from your device the piano!

Keyboard and Built-In Speakers

The Numa Compact 2x is as ideal for practise sessions at home as it is for live performances on stage. It has a set of built-in speakers and a headphone socket, and when you need more volume, there are line outputs for connecting to an amplifier or mixing console. What's more, you've got a MIDI input/output, a USB-MIDI connection as well as inputs for pedals (sold separately). Play the Numa Compact 2x using the 88 semi-weighted keys that are light enough for organ and synth sounds, but heavy enough for expressive piano parts.

Studiologic Numa Compact 2x Digital Piano

Purchased for my home studio 2 months ago. I'm primarily a guitar player, but like some vintage key sounds in my mixes.
The good:
+ form factor
+ easy operation
+ midi capabilities for use as master keyboard/controller
+ nice keyboard touch (synth/organ style, do not expect piano touch)
+ 2-way USB sound
+ most sounds are good. The downloaded grand piano's sound a bit better than the default one
+ layering/splitting

The not so good:
- effects are poor. All default programs have Reverb enabled (so I took so ~some~ time to disable it on all presets). My lowly 30 year old Alesis Microverb sounds much better. Reverb also has a strange unrealistic bloom envelope.
- effects can not really be configured, only level. Some parameters can be set with the joystick, and it automatically selects the parameter and range. On some effects moving the joystick causes ugly hard-clipping digital artifacts. Yes, there is a manual mode but that can not be linked to much, and only gives control over 1 thing at a time. I'm used to for instance 90's Roland equipment where you can easily configure literally everything, also with a tiny 2 line display.
- Some sounds are just bad: The upright piano for instance has a weird phasing sweep
- Very limited deep-dive configuration. For instance the range of the pitch-bend, the effects. Also the ability to reset individual instruments to default settings. For instance It always remembers the last state of the tone shaping slider on any instrument. And that turned out to be a problem, because when I moved the slider, it introduced ugly sounding filtering to a piano sound, and I could not get rid of it in any slider position. Only after resetting the whole firmware back to default, it was gone. It makes me afraid to touch sliders by accident :(
- No software editor available. Only an app to upload pre-fab sounds and update firmware
- Built-in speakers: don't expect any bass to be audible.
- It tries to be usable as an organ with Rotary speaker, but there is no STOP button for the Rotary. It does OK in speeding up-slowing down with the joystick, but to stop it, you have to click on the effect button 3 times to cycle through pan-trem and delay first.

Conclusion: it is a budget entry-level instrument and it shows. I paid full price and that now feels like too much. I will live with it in my situation, with outboard effects, but I don't think I would not dare use it if I was a pro in a performance setting.

Honderd presets is fijn.
