In the Hybrid Special, Michael Kelly has actually managed to make a model that lies somewhere between a semi-acoustic and an electro-acoustic guitar. The thinline body sits under a stunning slice of spalted maple that gives shape to the naturally airy character of sound while both a piëzo pickup and two magnetic humbuckers are fitted to capture every dimension of the tone this hollowbody is able to produce. More standard-issue is the provided three-way pickup selector switch and blend-pot combo, so that the perfect balance can be struck between the three pickups and, while the blended sound can be outputted as normal, a stereo-jack, Y-style cable can also be used to split the piëzo and humbucker signals and send them to separate amplifiers.

Tijdens het spelen merkte ik dat de actie wat te laag afgesteld stond. Gelukkig waren de vriendelijke mensen bij Bax Goes zo behulpzaam om de gitaar af te stellen naar mijn wensen. Uiteraard heb ik de gitaar gekocht en mee naar huis genomen. Na het monteren van een setje nieuwe snaren (09 gemonteerd, hoewel ik begrijp dat anderen de voorkeur geven aan dikkere snaren voor een voller akoestisch geluid, maar naar mijn mening speelt 09 toch soepeler) en het oliën van het fretboard was de gitaar helemaal naar mijn wens.
De afgelopen paar dagen ben ik er niet vanaf te slaan en vanavond neem ik hem voor het eerst mee om te repeteren. Na een paar dagen spelen ben ik nog steeds ontzettend blij met mijn aankoop. Het akoestische geluid is helder en warm. Het elektrische geluid van het hals element lijkt luider dan het geluid van het brug element. Het enige negatieve wat ik over de gitaar te zeggen heb, is dat de gronding niet helemaal in orde lijkt te zijn. Iets in de bedrading lijkt niet helemaal in orde, aangezien ik soms geen output heb in mijn brug element. Wellicht benader ik Bax hiervoor, of ik ga zelf even aan de klus.
Over het algemeen ben ik zeer tevreden over deze gitaar en raad ik iedereen aan deze een kans te geven, vooral als je op zoek bent naar een hybride gitaar.
