General

The Ibanez Artstar AS153B in Black has a 3-piece maple and mahogany neck, but the rest of this guitar's body is made entirely of maple. Futhermore, the neck is set-in and it features an ebony fretboard with 22 medium frets. The result is a great-sounding Artstar guitar with a sparkling timbre, especially when the two Super 58 Custom pickups are at play.

Ibanez Artstar AS153B Black with Tri-sound switch

With a 3-way pickup switch and separate volume and tone controls for each pickup, the Super 58 Custom pickups are versatile enough, but there's also a Tri-sound switch for the neck pickup. You can use this to turn the humbucker into a single coil or a parallel connected pickup. It makes the guitar even more versatile than it already was, allowing for a more authentic vintage sound. Finally, this class A instrument has an adjustable ART-1 bridge and a Quik Change II tailpiece.

Ibanez Artstar AS153B Black
Wrote the following about Ibanez Artstar AS153B Black
I should preface this review by stating that this guitar was bought as B-Stock, but described as

"Traces of use (no damage/scratches)". The guitar was offered without a hard or soft case.

When I ordered the guitar the sales person advised me that it would be packed in a box-within-a-box. However, when it arrived, the guitar was simply packed in a single box, packed with bubble wrap. There was no visible damage to the box upon delivery, and the guitar looked fine when I unpacked it. However, the next day I noticed that the guitar had suffered some minor impact damage to the rear corner near the bottom strap button. As this is a B-Stock guitar, I can live with this, but this does not qualify as "no damage/scratches". The action and intonation, both needed adjusting, and the supplied strings were pretty terrible, but I guess this is to be expected, and I was able to deal with this myself. Other niggles: the pickup selector plastic toggle is loose, and will not tighten, so it would appear that the thread is stripped.

Overall, it's a great-sounding guitar, that plays well and stands up well against a Gibson ES-335 that I own. The Tri-Sound switch gives a couple of usable extra sounds. The guitar is only let down by the cosmetic damage that I wasn't expecting to be present.

Gretsch Introduces the Vintage Select and Player Editions

Friday 29 January 2016

Gretsch fans can roughly be divided into two groups. On the one hand you have the purists who think the specifications from the 1950s and 1960s - the Gretsch heydays - are beyond dispute. On the other hand, you have the more practically minded guitarists who like to make modifications to their instruments. Luckily, both camps are being catered to with Gretsch's new series: the Vintage Select Editions and the Players Editions. Go for a modern classic like the G6118T-SGR or travel back in time to 1962 with the Gretsch G6119T-62GE!
