General

A semi-acoustic guitar by a well-known brand doesn't have to cost a fortune, as Guild shows with this Starfire II. It's a hollowbody guitar with an arched mahogany body and a natural finish that really shows off its characteristic wood grain. One look at this semi-acoustic is enough to know you're dealing with a top-notch instrument. Plug it into a good (tube)amp, and you'll have the warm tone of mahogany and the clear sound of the Guild humbuckers at your disposal.

Construction

The body of this Guild Starfire II is thinner than most standard semi-acoustic guitars, which makes it easier to handle while playing. Despite its thinner shape, the sound is full and warm, which has everything to do with the construction of this fully-laminated mahogany body. The top frets are easy to reach thanks to a Florentine cutaway, and two Guild LB-1 pickups add sparkling trebles to the overall sound to prevent it from getting too woolly. For those who are not fans of the vintage-style vibrato unit, the T.O.M bridge with tailpiece is a godsend. On top of it all, this guitar is easy to intonate and stays in tune with remarkable stability.

Guild Little Buckers

A characteristic feature of the Guild is its pickup configuration that consists of two Guild 'Little Buckers'. As far as sound is concerned, they are somewhere between a classic humbucker and a sparkling single-coil. They offer the brightness and clarity of a traditional P90 but with more warmth a lot less noise than a single-coil. The unwanted feedback hollowbodies are sometimes known for is effectively countered thanks to a solid block of mahogany at the bridge position. The comprehensive tone control enables you to produce a wide range of sounds. In short, this guitar has all the features you want in a hollowbody!

Luckily, both camps are being catered to with Gretsch's new series: the Vintage Select Editions and the Players Editions.
