General

For many bass players, the iconic StingRay Bass is a step too far across the bridge over the river of expenses. A hand-built American bass guitar can set you back as much as a small hatchback, which is why Music Man founded their daughter company Sterling. Sterling makes affordable copies of the original, with the same distinctive looks and sounds. The White Sterling by Music Man SUB Ray4 is based on the 4-string StingRay Bass. It is a genuine Music Man from top to bottom, yet comes at a much friendlier price.

Sterling SUB Ray4: distinct StingRay sound

This Indonesian Music Man features all of the StingRay's characteristics. For example, it is equipped with a powerful humbucker pickup mounted in a distinctively egg-shaped pickguard. The humbucker produces a full, fat sound with a proper dose of punch in both the low and high frequencies. Additionally, the bass features an active 2-band equalizer that allows you to boost and filter the bass and trebles. The SUB Ray4 is a widely versatile bass guitar for many genres, with a predisposition for the rough stuff.

Rugged construction

The Sterling by Music Man SUB Ray4 has a body made of solid hard wood. The 21-fret maple neck of the Sterling is - like all Musicman bass guitars - bolted to the body with six screws, a solid construction that enhances tonal transference and sustain. Should you ever need to adjust the neck, you can do so in a jiffy. The characteristic Music Man truss rod nut is on the end of the neck and can easily be adjusted without removing the neck or strings.
