Ik begin met een disclaimer: ik ben 55 jaar en speel sinds 1976 in amateur /semi pro bandjes , disco, funk, reggae en indo country rock. Dus mijn review is subjectief en vanuit mijn persoonlijke visie geschreven.
Een jonge heavy metal banger zal natuurlijk een product totaal anders aanvoelen...

In totaal heb ik 4 x een Mexicaans jazz bass standard in bezit gehad.
Er is al zoveel geschreven over de Mexicaantjes: ze zouden wisselvallig in kwaliteit zijn, de VM squiers zouden de Mexicanen naar de kroon steken, enfin wat twijfelachtig.
Echter de recente jaren is de kwaliteitscontrole flink aangescherpt en ik weet uit Eigen ervaring.

3 x had ik een " foute" Mexciaan gehad: slordig afgewerkt, matig geluid, frets om te huilen (en zeker gezien de prijs die ik ervoor betaalde) . Echter een recent nieuw exemplaar was stukken beter dan ik verwachtte.

Alder hout, goede electronica, keurig afgewerkte frets en eigenlijk nauwelijks onderdoen voor de USA standard qua " levendigheid" .

Al die verhalen dat de huidige CV en VM squiers de huidige Mexicanen overtreffen acht ik discutabel. De Mexicanen maken tegenwoordig echt goede basjes met bijbehorende winkelprijs.

De goede exemplaar die ik bezat was dus de zwarte uitvoering en wat mij nog het meest bijstaat dat dit mijn allerbeste slap bas is geweest die ik ooit in eigendom had. En ik heb zelf een Marcus Miller basje gehad...
Mijn Mex standard was zeer veelzijdig en echt allround en had maar een minpunt: hij kon nogal " boomerig " klinken, wat ondefinieerbaar als je de hoge tonen knop dichtdraaide.

Wat dat betreft klonk mijn USA standard veel strakker en overtuigender. Daarentegen had de Mexicaan met nota bene een rosewood neck een fantastisch slap toon.
Heb met die bas vaak lovegames van level 42 gespeeld waarbij ik eigenlijk dacht dat dat nooit kon.
Maar ach, alle volume poti' s vol open , hoge tonen ook en een cabinet met kleine speakertjes en deze Mex Standard pakte het geweldig op.

Zelfs de boetiekbasjes die ik bespeelde (bijvoorbeeld Ibanez BTB 670) haalde het niet bij deze Mex qua felheid en funk gerichtheid. En ook met deze Mex bas kon ik lekker blues en country spelen.
Alleen zoals boven vermeld , dat boomerig geluid was wat minder.

Een dikke 4 dus !
