General

A popular modification for Fender Precision basses it the addition for a Jazz bass pickup at the bridge, as it adds a great deal of versatility. Where the Precision's split single-coil pickups have a nice edge to them, the J-bass adds some definition and focus, making this PJ bass suitable for both (heavy) rock and blues and tight funk or jazz. Fender's actually saving you some money then, as the Limited Edition American Standard PJ bass in 3-Color Sunburst leaves the factory with this modification and more already installed. It's a Precision body with a slender Jazz neck and a focused Jazz bass pickup.

Construction

The Fender P bass body is made of alder, which is often used for Fender bass guitars. Meanwhile, the Jazz-style neck is made of maple and features a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard. The result is a highly balanced core sound with focused bass, rich mids and nice warm trebles, thanks to the rosewood fingerboard. As for the electronics, Fender added the aforementioned Jazz pickup at the bridge to the standard P-bass pickup at the neck. Do note, however, that these are not just any regular pickups, as both come from the famed Fender Custom Shop. At the bridge, you'll find a Custom Shop '60s Single-Coil Jazz Bass pickup, and there's a Custom Shop '60s Split Single-Coil Precision Bass pickup.
