This Low Volume ride cymbal by Zildjian is meant for practising, but thanks to its special alloy, it sounds good enough to be used for small-scale performances as well. It sounds about 80% softer than regular cymbals, no matter what you use to play it - sticks, rods, brushes, mallets, you name it. The L80 Low Volume ride plays exactly the same as a standard ride, and is 20 inches in diameter.

Spijtig dat Zildjan de 20 inch ride niet is opgenomen in een van hun voordeelpakketten in plaats van bijv. 18 inch crash/ride, waarvan de bel een vreemde vorm heeft in vergelijking met gangbare ride bekkens. De bel van de 20 inch ride voelt wel heel natuurlijk aan en maakt de set compleet! Nu ik zowel de 14" hi-hat, 16 " crash, 18 " crash/ride en 20" ride heb uitgeprobeerd, zou ik eerder de combinatie Zildjian L80 38 Low Volume bekkenset + 20 inch ride aanraden, dan voor bijvoorbeeld enkel de Zildjian L80 468 Low Volume bekkenset (omdat de crash/ride toch niet zo natuurlijk aanvoelt als de 20" ride).
Qua geluid is het niet echt aangenaam om naar te luisteren, alle bekkens klinken vrij scherp en je hoort de aanraking van de stok op het metaal harder dan het cymbaalgeluid zelf, dus 'low volume gigs' doen met deze bekkenset (zoals door Zildjan wordt omschreven) lijkt me niet optimaal, tenzij misschien met de hi-hat.
Prima te gebruiken om zachter te oefenen en zelfs interessant als effect-bekken in normale context. Voor de zekerheid speel ik met nylon tips, want ik weet niet of houten stokpunten van al die gaatjes houden.
Prima bekken. Tip: koop een set, ben je een stuk goedkoper uit.
