General

Sony's ZS-RS70BTB is a portable, digital radio with CD player. This black boombox has a compact design but packs a load of functionality. It is capable of receiving analogue FM radio stations as well as digital DAB and DAB+ stations. The latter offer crystal-clear sound and are less prone to interference than their FM counterparts. Broadcasts via the new digital standard DAB+ take up much less space than analogue FM broadcasts, which means they free up more space in the ether for other radio stations. The CD player plays back both regular audio CDs and data CDs with MP3 and WMA files. Additionally, you can play back music from devices like mobile phones via Bluetooth, or use the audio input and USB port to play your favourite songs. It's clear that Sony has created quite a multifunctional device with this mobile ZS-RS70BTB boombox!

Operating the ZS-RS70BTB

The Sony boombox reproduces audio by means of two 3.1-inch speakers with a power of 2.3 watts each, resulting in a delightful stereo sound. You can operate the boombox by means of its button interface, which includes buttons for volume level, radio mode, playback mode, presets and much more. The results of your settings can be heard, obviously, but are also visible on the LCD display of the radio, which shows you information concerning radio stations, volume and sound sources. The ZS-RS70BTB allows you to select 10 digital and 20 FM radio stations as presets, making them instantly accessible. DAB+ radio stations are available in several countries world-wide, particularly in Europe.

Possibilities

The ZS-RS70BTB allows you to play back music via Bluetooth. In order to do so, the Sony boombox uses Near Field Communication (NFC), a technology that enables you to connect your smartphone to your boombox without any effort. Within a 10-metre radius, boombox and smartphone are able to communicate with each other. Would you like to enjoy your own music or your favourite radio station without bothering anyone else? Simply connect a pair of headphones to the 3.5mm jack output. You can easily take the Sony ZS-RS70BTB digital boombox with you wherever you go - just put in a couple of batteries and you don't even have to worry about finding a power socket.

Are You Ready for DAB+ Digital Radio?

Tuesday 19 April 2016 By Julie Alexander

In the near future, old-fashioned AM/FM radio will be replaced by digital radio, also known as DAB radio (Digital Audio Broadcast). DAB protocol has been in development since the '80s, and now it's making room for the more efficient and comprehensive DAB+. DAB+ utilises AAC audio instead of MPEG-2 audio. Because AAC audio deals with available bandwidth more efficiently, other media such as traffic information, program information and slide shows can also be transmitted via DAB+ protocol
