General

His name might not ring a bell right away, but chances are you've heard him play before. Phil X is a Canadian session musician who has toured with Bon Jovi and played on albums for famous artists such as Tommy Lee, Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson and Alice Cooper. He's also famous on Youtube, where he regularly appears rocking out with rare vintage guitars. We think you'll agree that's reason enough for Yamaha to give him a signature model, the result being this white SG1801PX.

Yamaha SG1801PX: Arcane PX90 pickup

The SG1801PX is based on Yamaha classic SG model, and has been completely adjusted to fit Phil X's specific needs. That's why the guitar is equipped with an Arcane PX90 single-coil pickup and a dummy pickup in the neck position made of the base plate of a PX90. While there is only one volume and one tone knob and no pickup switch, the recesses on the back are still the same as a standard Yamaha SG model. Phil wanted to keep these, because they influence the sound of the guitar. Plus this way, you can always add a pickup, potentiometer and a switch, should you need them.

Construction and sound

African mahogany was used for the body of the SG1802PX, with a beautifully carved top. The set neck is equipped with a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with an X inlay in the 12th fret position. This classic combination of wood types, construction and P90 pickup results in a full, warm tone with rich mids, sweet trebles and outstanding sustain. Furthermore, the hardware of the Yamaha SG1802PX consists of a set of high-quality Grover locking tuners, for quick string changes and stable tuning. The Tune-o-matic bridge and the tailpiece are by Tonepros, and equipped with a locking mechanism for extra immediacy and sustain.
