General

Acoustic pianos and Yamaha Clavinovas definitely have an attractive sound, but they're certainly not easy to move around. And that's not a bad thing - they're just not made to be portable. If you do need a portable digital piano with a good keyboard and an excellent sound though, there are certainly alternatives, such as Yamaha's P155S. The Yamaha P155S digital piano in silver is light, easy, and sings like an angel, just as its angelic silver colour with cherrywood accents suggests.

The sound

Sound is, of course, the most important priority when it comes to a musical instrument, and Yamaha doesn't dissapoint with the excellent AWM Dynamic Stereo Sampling engine featured with this piano. While the name might be a bit of a mouthful, the technology itself is streamlined to give you optimal stereo sampled piano sounds with four different attack levels available for every note you play. This offers you an incredible dynamic range that you might not expect from a portable digital piano - from pianissimo to fortissimo, you can always create the expression you desire. Along with the attack samples, Yamaha has added key release samples to the mix so you can hear the "piano string" ring through even after you've released the key. All of this combines to offer you sound with immaculate detail, and we haven't even mentioned the sound varity yet, including electric pianos, organs and strings.

Additional features

With this piano, you have the ability to adjust the brilliance, and with four different types of reverb you can even choose which type of room it sounds like you're playing in. Additional effects (chorus, phaser, tremolo, rotary) are particularly interesting for the electric piano sounds. Moreover, the built-in recorder allows you to record your sessions, and a metronome helps you keep perfect time. Two headphone connections are quite handy for playing in silence, and are joined by other connections including MIDI I/O, line out, pedal connection, and USB. The entire instrument is easy to navigate and can play a vital role in schools, churches and care facilities, as well as in music groups (harmony, accordions, etc.) that have a portable piano such as this P155S at its core. Of course, you can always keep this instrument all to yourself as a lovely addition to your home or studio, too!
