When Mapex endorser and Living Colour drummer Will Calhoun was asked to design a Black Panther snare drum for this famous manufacturer, he immediately had the idea to make a snare drum that is suited for any musical context. Will Calhoun is a drummer with a repertoire that varies from metal to jazz, and often tours with different artists. He wanted to make a single snare drum that he can use regardless of whether he is playing with a DJ, a metal band or a jazz band. They took some drastic measures. A snare shell was buried underground, to see what the effects would be. After three years, the shell was dug up and fitted with some heads. The sound was awesome and it looked good as well. After that, the concept of the organic snare drum was developed further and eventually Mapex succeeded in making a snare drum that perfectly meets all of Will Calhoun's expectations. And that snare drum is the Black Panther series' Nomad snare drum.
Black Panther Nomad Snare
The shell of the Nomad snare is made of 1.2mm thick brass, which really allows the snare to sing. The 45-degree bearing edge contributes to that sound, as it allows the drumhead to make optimal contact with the shell. With its 13-inch diameter, this snare has an open, bright character and a very sensitive response, no matter if you tune it high or low. The 6-inch deep shell gives the drum plenty of volume and a beautiful, warm and open sound. Thanks to the Sonic Saver hoops, shell resonance has been optimised and rimclicks and rimshots have a great sound that is well balanced with the open snare sound. With the Cylinder-Drive snare strainer, it's easy to adjust how tight you want the steel snare wires against the resonant head. The snare drum has a Sirocco Burst finish and it's adorned with a number of nomadic 'Adinkra' symbols. This snare is delivered with a protective cover.
