American Audio DLT-15A active speaker

American Audio has given us a nice treat in the form of an active 15-inch speaker with class D amplifier. The big advantage here is the lightweight cabinet, which is made of plywood to keep it robust, yet easy to transport. The DLT-15A was designed with the mobile DJ in mind - the type of person who wants the charm and sound of a wooden construction, but wants to spare his or her back in the long run. Weighing in at only 27 kg, this active speaker is relatively light and quite manageable. The robust construction and strong metal grille make it road-proof too, so you don't have to worry when you're on the go.

The DLT-15A and its class D amp

Modern technology deserves the credit for this feather of a speaker. Because the DLT-15A's amp circuit was built with class D efficiency, many of the heavy traditional components could be eliminated. Thanks to class D efficiency, as much of the voltage as possible is converted into usable power. Furthermore, efficient components and a crossover filter work to ensure that minimal power is wasted.

Components and speaker design

The DLT-15A is equipped with a rugged 1.3-inch driver for the high frequencies, which is mounted to produce a 90 x 40-degree dispersion angle. This means that the sound disperses further horizontally than vertically, which keeps the high tones in a more compact package to be delivered to your audience with precision. Moreover, a relatively large 15-inch woofer is responsible for the low frequency range, and can produce an impressive amount of bass. All of these features make the DLT-15A an ideal choice for the mobile DJ or entertainer who find two complete full-range speakers sufficient. Of course, we shouldn't finish without mentioning that the robust plywood housing will protect the internal components while tightening up the bass frequencies, and it's all topped off with a classy splatter paint finish.
