Timbales consist of two drums on a stand, which produce a high, bright sound and are played with drum sticks or mallets. Timbales resemble the tom but are less deep, tuned to a higher pitch and only have a single (top) head. These percussion instruments have their roots in Afro-Cuban music and, nowadays, are especially popular in Latin music. They are also used in rock music, reggae and many other music styles, however. Timbales can be nicely complemented by percussion instruments such as Cowbells, Wood Block, large toms and Snare Drum. You can also use the timbales as part of a standard drum kit.
