General

In 2011, sE Electronics broke the performance barrier with their X1 condenser microphone. Now they're aiming even higher with the X1 A. In fact, there's not much this condenser microphone can't do. Whether you want to record vocals, acoustic, electric or percussion instruments, the X1 A is capable of capturing the sound perfectly. It has a -20 dB attenuation pad switch enabling it to pick up even the loudest of instruments without any problem. There's also a low cut filter which helps to eliminate low frequencies. Add to that its all-metal housing, integrated windshield and gold-plated XLR connector and you've got yourself a great mic. Even if the X1 A is your first microphone, it's one you'll want to keep forever.

Wrote the following about SE Electronics X1 A condenser microphone

Ik zocht een relatief goedkope microfoon om stereo opnames mee te kunnen maken voor akoestische gitaar, percussie, etc, maar wel met een acceptabele kwaliteit. Na lang zoeken kwam ik uit op de Se X1 A.

Na wat testen en uitproberen moet ik zeggen dat ik behoorlijk onder de indruk ben. De Se X1 A doet niet heel veel onder voor zijn duurdere familieleden (de Se2200A en de Se3 die ik hier ook heb liggen). En in vergelijking met mic's uit dezelfde prijs, zoals de nogal blikkerig klinkende samson C01 is het gewoon een veel betere deal!

De sound van de Se X1A is redelijk natuurgetrouw, maar heeft wel een 'in your face' karakter. Dat maakt hem erg prettig voor gitaar, vocal en piano opnames. Wat me wel stoort is het boost in het hoog (vanaf de 5k). Dit geeft een heldere sound, maar maakt in mijn ogen de mic ook wat blikkerig. Echter is dit geen gigantisch probleem, want het is makkelijk weg te EQ'en.

De behuizing van de mic is fantastisch! Mooi design en lekker stevig. Geen plastic rommel. Wel voelen de shuif-shakelaars (-20db pad en de low cut filter) wat minder stevig. Ik denk dat deze over een jaar of 2 wel wat losser gaan zitten. Ook goed om te weten: bij deze microfoon zit geen shockmount, alleen een clip. De shokcmount is wel los te kopen, maar dat kost natuurlijk wat extra.

Kortom, pluspunten zijn:
+ een stevige mic, met mooi design
+ de sound is erg goed voor de prijs: natuurlijk en 'in your face'.
+ mooi voor akoestische instrumenten en vocals

Minpunten zijn:
- iets te veel boost in het hoog
- geen shockmount
- shuif shakelaars voelen niet super stevig

Toch, als je een eerste mic zoekt of, net als ik, een goedkope grootmembraan nodig had naast je andere mic's, dan is de Se X1 A toch echt wel een hele goede keuze! Want de sound, het belangrijkste, is erg goed voor een mic in deze prijsklasse!!
