Fender is best known for their guitars and amplifiers, but for these innovative in-ears, they didn't have to re-invent the wheel. Instead, they purchased Aurisonics, a headphone brand revered by musicians and audiophiles, and relied on their expertise for the development of a series of high-quality, affordable in-ear monitors. The high-quality, specialised FXA5 in-ear monitors are the best result of years of audio experience and research. Their special 3D-printed shell is based on Digital Hybrid Technology and snug-fitting SureSeal tips make these in-ear monitors comfortable to wear, even for extended periods of time.

Het is altijd een beetje eng om in-ears te kopen, omdat je van tevoren niet weet hoe ze zitten en klinken. Zo ben ik ooit de fout ingegaan met de Shure SE425, die perfect zitten, maar gewoonweg alleen maar 'mid' weergeven. Ook heb ik de Shure SE215. Deze vind ik zelfs beter klinken dan de SE425, terwijl dit niet zo zou moeten zijn als je naar het prijskaartje kijkt. Maar toch ben ik ook daarmee niet geheel tevreden.
De nieuwe serie van Fender (voorheen waren deze van Aurisonics; Fender heeft het bedrijf overgenomen) was veelbelovend. Mijn keus viel op de Fender FXA5 omdat deze uitsluitend gebalanceerde armaturen heeft, en geen dynamic driver. Het voordeel hiervan is dat er geen luchtverplaatsing in je oren plaatsvindt, en dat merk je na een avondje draaien echt wel aan je oren. Het nadeel van het ontbreken van een dynamic driver is wel, dat er minder laag wordt weergegeven. Maar dat blijkt met deze in-ears héél erg mee te vallen!
Het geluid is prachtig vol en gedetailleerd. Het laag is netjes en zeker niet te mager, het hoog is sprankelend, en alles wat daartussen zit is ook dik in orde.
Het is even wennen aan de andere vorm, maar ik draag ze eigenlijk hetzelfde als de in-ears van andere merken, dus niet rechtop (zoals afgebeeld), maar licht naar achteren gekanteld, zoals ze steun vinden in het onderste deel van mijn oorschelpen. De meegeleverde tips zijn OK, maar ik ben nu eenmaal verknocht aan de custom tips van Comply Foam. Deze geven de beste seal, zelfs als je met je oren beweegt. Deze gebruik ik dus in combinatie met de FXA5.
De kabel bestaat uit 3 separate, getwiste aders. Het lijkt alsof het probleem van twists in de kabel hiermee wordt voorkomen; de kabel is immers al gedraaid. De delen die je om je oorschelp 'kneedt', blijven goed op hun plaats zitten. Die van Shure willen nog wel eens terugveren. De kabel is glad en soepel; gerommel met de kabel is veel minder hoorbaar dan die van Shure. Hoe stevig de kabel is, moet zich nog uitwijzen. De connectoren aan de oorzijde zijn standaard, dus de kabel is eventueel te vervangen door die van een ander merk.
Al met al ben ik heel tevreden met deze in-ears. Mijn vorige gebruikte ik eigenlijk alleen maar op de momenten waarop ik ze echt nodig had (bij het voorluisteren en mixen), maar deze laat ik bijna continu aan staan tijdens het draaien, en zal ik ook regelmatig buiten mijn werk gebruiken, omdat ze gewoonweg heerlijk klinken.
