The PCM-D100 is Sony's flagship when it comes to portable recorders. The handheld audio recorder is part of Sony's High-Resolution Audio Initiative, a series of products that enable true music lovers to enjoy their recordings in the best possible quality. The PCM-D100 has been developed to register and reproduce sound sources in a natural way, retaining the qualities of the original sound as much as possible. Inspiration always hits you when you least expect it, and your next hit song may pop up in your head at any time. At moments like those, it's important to be able to record your musical ideas quickly, before you get a chance to forget them. Luckily, this handheld Sony recorder can help you out. It records data in PCM (up to 192 kHz), DSD or MP3 (128 and 320 kbps) format, and it also allows you to play back FLAC, WMA and ACC files too.
The Sony Pro PCM-D100
If you're not that familiar with the technology of handheld recorders, you might wonder what makes this PCM-D100 so exceptional. The answer is simple: Sony has equipped this handheld audio recorder with all the features you could possibly wish for. The many useful functions of the recorder all work exactly like you'd expect them to, which makes the PCM-D100 remarkably practical and easy to use. Thanks to its convenient dimensions you can easily take the recorder with you wherever you go, so you can use it to capture jam sessions, live shows, interviews, etc.
The Technological Features of the Sony PCM-D100
Sony has equipped its portable recorder with two stereo electret microphones, which can be used in two configurations - XY or wide - and enable you to make high-quality recordings. The PCM-D100 records to a 32GB internal memory that can be expanded at will by means of an SD card. Featuring a lightweight aluminium housing, the Sony audio recorder is quite rugged and therefore ideal for demanding professional applications. The PCM-D100 is powered by means of four AA batteries, which keep the device going for a considerable while. Once the batteries are empty, you can quickly replace them and resume recording. Files can easily be transported to and from the recorder by means of the USB port or an SD card. Additional features of the Sony PCM-D100 include a digital pitch control, a dual digital limiter, a low-cut filter, an A-B repeat function and Super Bit Mapping.
After Recording
Once you're done recording, the results can easily be uploaded to a PC or Mac by means of a USB 2.0 high-speed connection - a type of connection that is often used for the transfer of mass storage. Downloading isn't a problem either, of course. If you're still on location, you can verify whether your recordings are up to scratch using the Flexible Playback Features, as Sony calls them, which feature both key and pitch control. The difference between those two functions is as follows: adjust the key and the playback speed remains the same, but adjust the pitch and the playback speed changes accordingly.
