The tight Apollo Twin X Duo desktop audio interface from Universal Audio treats Windows users to in-hardware Neve, API and Manley preamp emulations to reduce the load on your computer and boost the quality of any production work. All of this is made possible by exclusive Unison technology: a preamp section that's controlled by an extremely powerful DSP and enables real-time recording via some of the world's most iconic preamps and EQ units - each plucked out of the golden age that was the sixties and seventies. The Unison tech applies to both the Hi-Z and microphone inputs and even adjusts the impedance curve to match the plugged in guitar, bass or microphone to the selected preamp.

Since everything happens inside the hardware, professional recording and post-production work is backed up by butter-smooth performance. Een product waarvan ik dacht dat ik hem niet nodig had. En niet wist van het verschil in geluidskwaliteit met interfaces.

Na lange twijfel toch de Apollo Twin X USB gekocht. Gelijk bij het uitpakken merk je al dat het van hoge kwaliteit is, een stevige behuizing en de feeling van de knoppen zijn solide.

Toch heb ik een minpunt bij het product.
En dat is dat er geen usb 3.0 kabel mee wordt geleverd. Maar dit heeft geen betrekking tot het product zelf.

Bij het aansluiten van het apparaat kon ik gemakkelijk de drivers van de product website halen.
Gelijk bij het eerste moment van luisteren werd ik enthousiast door de geluidskwaliteit.
De midden tonen komen echt naar voren en de elementen in je mix kun je makkelijk van elkaar onderscheiden.
Bij het mixen van je tracks hoor je daardoor gemakkelijk of er bepaalde frequenties in de weg zitten.

De functies van het apparaat zijn voor mij genoeg en de plugin intergratie van Universal Audio is een leuke optie
dat mijn werkflow verbeterd.
De geluidskwaliteit van de headset output is kraakhelder, ik ervaar het geluid als strak en ruimtelijk.
En dat is waar ik naar op zoek ben. Dit geld overigens ook voor de main output.
Wat ook erg handig is dat ik met een druk op de knop mijn geluid kan dimmen en zelfs volledig op mute zetten.
Ook is de feeling van draaiknop voor de volume erg fijn.
Door de 4 Outputs kan ik in de toekomst altijd nog een extra set speakers aansluiten, wat voor mij ook de bedoeling is.

Kortom,
Deze interface is zeker een upgrade voor mijn studio.
Ik ben erg blij met de aanschaf van de Apollo Twin en ik kan er op vertrouwen wat ik hoor en zie.

Ik geef dit product geen volle 5 sterren, maar een solide 4.7, en hier is waarom:

Eindelijk heeft Universal Audio een Apollo gelanceerd dat vrijwel perfect werkt op Windows. De installatie verliep soepel en ik kon snel aan de slag. Bij het testen met mijn Beyer Dynamic DT770 Pro werd ik weggeblazen door het verschil in geluidskwaliteit. (vorige interface Arturia Audiofuse) Hetzelfde gold voor een track met Adam A7V-monitors; de kwaliteit was indrukwekkend.

Het apparaat zelf is stevig gebouwd en intuïtief in gebruik - mag wel voor deze prijs natuurlijk want goedkoop is het niet.
De latency is zeer laag en de UAD-plugins zijn vanzelfsprekend van topkwaliteit.

Toch is het jammer dat er geen optische uitgang op zit. Daarnaast word ik overspoeld met aanbiedingen en verleidingen van Universal Audio om meer van hun plugins te kopen, wat enigszins irritant is.

Het selecteren van plugins in de UA-console kan lastig zijn, omdat je een lijst van alle plugins te zien krijgt, inclusief demoversies. Dit kan verwarrend zijn en kan ertoe leiden dat je onbedoeld veel geld uitgeeft aan software.

Helaas is de klantensupport van UA heel onpersoonlijk; eerst krijg je te maken met een bot en daarna met een script met mogelijke oplossingen. Ik vroeg bijvoorbeeld om opheldering over enkele dubbele plugins en of ik andere plugins kon kiezen bij mijn andere promotie (gratis plugins bij de Universal Audio DLX-microfoon), maar kreeg nog steeds geen reactie.

Na een hele tijd wikken en wegen toch de beslissing genomen de Apollo Twin X USB aan te schaffen, het is immers toch een stevige uitgave. De bijgeleverde plugins hebben me over de streep getrokken.

Wát een geluid! Ik hoor ineens dingen die ik met mijn oude interface niet hoorde. Het geluid is crisp maar niet schel. Lage frequenties zijn zeker aanwezig maar niet overheersend. In combinatie met Focal Alpha 65 Evo een hele geslaagde setup.

De mogelijkheden zijn schier eindeloos te noemen. Routing binnen en buiten je DAW verloopt vlekkeloos en de Apollo integreert erg goed in Ableton Live 11. Veel van de plugins zijn óók native op je computer te gebruiken dus zelfs op locatie zonder je Apollo kun je gebruik maken van de plugins.

De Apollo Twin X USB wordt aangesloten dmv. een USB-C kabel. Let wel op dat je computer ook over een USB 3.1 (10gbit) poort beschikt anders kan er niet genoeg data verwerkt worden en loopt het geheel wat stroef. Dat kán een dingetje zijn dus let wel goed op bij aanschaf dat ook je computer dat die over een échte USB 3.1 (USB 3.1 type A of 3.1 type C) poort beschikt.

De Universal Audio Apollo Twin X is een must-have voor elke producer. Professioneel of op hobby niveau, dit apparaat en de plugins tillen je geluid naar next level sound.
