General
The Scarlett series by Focusrite is exceptionally popular and not without reason! These interface are all easy to use, they offer professional audio quality and seamless compatibility with Windows as well as Mac laptops and computers. This Scarlett 2i2 is a 'starter model', but its quality is equal to that of more extensive versions. The 24-bit/96kHz digital audio resolution guarantees a wide dynamic range and crystal-clear audio quality. Thanks to the stable quick drivers, a low latency is ensured - perfect for use with virtual instruments and other high-speed audio applications.
Scarlett 2i2: USB interface with software
The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 offers two microphone inputs, with XLR combo connectors. Both channels feature a gain rotary knob and a switch for line or instrument signals. The preamps were developed with all the expertise that Focusrite have to offer, and they have the same design as the high-grade Saffire PRO 40 and Liquid Saffire 56. A direct monitoring connector is fitted on the front of the Scarlett 2i2. On the back of the unit we find a USB output and two jack connectors, which function as main outs. The interface is USB bus-powered, has a metal road-proof housing and comes with Ableton Live Lite 8.

Afgezien van dat mankement is het een prima interface, voelt degelijk aan, komt fijne software bij en ziet er gewoon gelikt uit. Geluidskwaliteit was ook zeker prima.
Overigens zeer netjes geholpen door Bax bij het retourneren, ging allemaal vlekkeloos.

Positief:
1. De geluidskwaliteit is opmerkelijk goed. Zelfs de commercieel getinte reviews hebben niet gelogen.
2. De feedback-leds zijn bijzonder handig als je met veel verschillende instrumenten / microfoons werkt. Dit kan je potentieel veel tijd besparen.
3. Robuust ontwerp. Aluminium. Steviger dan al het andere wat op mijn bureau staat.
4. Power over USB, dus portable.
5. Drivers werken out of the box. (Ook op Linux distro's met automatische non-free driver support.) (Download voor de zekerheid toch maar de nieuwste)

Negatief:
1. Instrument-in is mijns inziens waardeloos: je levert kwaliteit in om meer volume te krijgen. Dit kan ik ook bereiken door lomp gebruik van een limiter. Echter heb ik niet geprobeerd wat het effect is in combinatie met een Direct Box, dus wellicht heb ik geen recht van spreken. Ik speel mijn gitaren in over de line-in, of ik gebruik een mic(+amp), en dat gaat verder prima. Geen reden om de kaart niet aan te schaffen.
2. De enige reden die ik kan bedenken om deze kaart NIET te kopen is vanwege het feit dat bij het aan- en uitschakelen van mijn PC er een enorme impuls door mijn monitoren gaat (en headphones), als een soort knal. (De feedback leds op de line-in worden een fractie van een seconde rood, ook zonder ingestoken kabels.) Dit ligt zeker niet aan de driver (geloof me; of niet). Dit ligt ook niet aan de OS (zowel met Debian 8, als bij Ubuntu 14-16, als bij Windows 7 en 10 gebeurt het). Wellicht ligt het aan mijn moederboard, maar op internetfora zijn er meer mensen die klagen over "cracks and bangs when restarting the PC with the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2". Ik heb deze kaart nu een paar jaar in mijn bezit, het is nooit veranderd, en ik vind het af en toe toch wel storend om iedere keer mijn monitoren uit te zetten voordat ik mijn PC uit zet of reboot. (Ik heb er namelijk niet zoveel trek in dat mijn Tannoy Reveal 601A worden gesloopt door een recidiverende kortsluiting in een geluidskaart die 6 x zo goedkoop is. Bovendien zijn die inmiddels onvervangbaar geworden...) Met de kennis van nu zou ik om die reden gewoon een andere kopen, en ik vraag me tijdens dit schrijven af waarom ik dat nog niet heb gedaan. Ik heb de kaart ooit een terug gestuurd naar Bax-shop, maar die konden geen probleem vinden. Wellicht ligt het dan toch aan mijn moederboard (te weten Asus P7P55-D)

Conclusie:
Goed instapmodel met verbazingwekkend goed geluid voor de prijs. LED-feedback, portable en stevig. Niet alle functies zijn even bruikbaar, en er bestaan wat zeldzame problemen bij sommige gebruikers die erg vervelend kunnen worden als ze jaren aanhouden. Ondanks de persoonlijke ergernissen heeft deze kaart toch een speciaal plekje in mijn hart weten te veroveren, en zou ik hem, in de wetenschap dat slechts weinig mensen het "cracks and bangs"-probleem beschrijven, iedere beginnende producer of gevorderde muzikant aanraden.
De scarlett 2i2 wordt aanbevolen voor linux en wordt direct herkend en in QjackCtl kan ik de scarlett meteen selecteren. De sound is uitstekend. Hiervoor heb ik een ART tube mp usb project gehad die ook direct herkend werd in linux maar met een heel dun geluid.
De oplichtende ringen rondom de 2 gain-knoppen zijn duidelijk. de gain-knoppen zijn donker met een kleine inkeping die de stand weergeeft. Deze inkepingen heb ik wit gemaakt zodat ik de stand van de knop goed kan aflezen. Dit was eigenlijk het enige minpuntje dat ik kon ontdekken.

perfect mooi ding!
Er zijn wat beperkingen maar wat verwacht je ook voor zo'n bescheiden bedrag. Zo kan 'ie wel 96 kHz aan maar geen 24 bits (alleen 16), de latency instelling kan niet voorbij de 10ms (tot 20ms was handig geweest) en voor mijn Sennheiser HD600 headphones had 'ie net en tikje meer output power mogen hebben. Maar dit zijn natuurlijk details: al met al een uitstekend apparaat!
Nog niet veel opgenomen maar wat ik heb opgenomen zeer tevreden over.
Verder heb ik voornamelijk gekocht voor koptelefoon uitgang. Ook hierover zeer tevreden!
Makkelijk aan te sluiten en te bedienen. EN groot plus punt, geheel compatibel met linux systemen (alsa & Jack)!
Daarnaast heeft het nog een mooi uiterlijk!
En de prijs is natuurlijk erg goed voor wat je krijgt.
