General
For the 1953, Michael Kelly have seamlessly fused together tradition and innovation. This T-style electric guitar owes its vintage looks to an alder body, which has been fitted with a striking flamed maple top and mounted with a fixed, six-saddle bridge for precise intonation. The modern C-profile neck instantly offers a trusted feel, while the 10.5-inch fretboard radius is a little flatter than usual for eased note bending.
The 1953 with Quad Mod
While the Michael Kelly 1953 is armed with two passive Rockfield TexPlus single-coil pickups for a bright, twangy sound, the best part has got to be the Quad Mod. The Quad Mod refers to the pickup switch selector and as the name suggests, gives you four options instead of the usual three. When switched to the fourth position, the bridge and neck pickup are switched into series, and the result is a fat, punchy sound that immediately reminds you of a humbucker. Basically, the Quad Mod is a highly useful extra tonal option.
special features: position 4 switches the bridge and neck pickup into series

For the price paid, this is an absolutely remarkable guitar. Even for the full retail it would have been a good buy. I like the look, the flamed maple is very pretty - the spec states that it is a maple top although whether that is a flamed maple top or a plain top with flamed veneer is not made clear. When you look at the back, it is just possible to discern that the body is made from three pieces of alder. The inclusion of comfort bevels is definitely a great bonus compared with original Telecasters and copies. I love the neck, it feels like bare wood which makes it very easy to play and has a nice profile and fretboard radius. The electronics are great, the pickups sound really good and the 'Quadmod', which I have used myself on a home built Tele, gives a good, beefy sound in position 4. What I really liked as soon as I saw it was the jackplate and jack. Not that awful thing like on other original and copy Teles but something more akin to a Les Paul, securely screwed on and, in my opinion, far more practical. All in all, this guitar represents a well thought out mix of the traditional and practical based on experience with the original instrument. I love it.

Whether you've already started thinking about your Christmas shopping list or not, Fender has one or two items you might want to add to it.
