General

Gretsch's G5220 Jet BT is a single-cut electric guitar from the attractively-priced Electromatic series. It has a chambered mahogany body with a maple top and a set-in mahogany neck. The fretboard is made of walnut which is not only similar in appearance to rosewood, it also adds warmth and a lightly rounded bite to the airy overall sound this Gretsch guitar produces.

G5220 Electromatic Jet BT: Broad'Tron humbuckers

Two Black Top Broad'Tron humbucker pickups are responsible for delivering the sound to your amplifier. Unlike regular humbuckers, these Baldwin-styled pickups offer more definition which makes this guitar excellent for music styles including rock, rockabilly and country. Each pickup has its own volume potentiometer and share master volume and tone controls. The master volume also has a treble bleed circuit to ensure that none of the high frequencies are lost no matter the settings.

Gretsch G5220 Electromatic Jet BT Casino Gold electric guitar
Wrote the following about Gretsch G5220 Electromatic Jet BT Casino Gold electric guitar
Delivered in 3 working days, well packaged and protected. My first Gretsch (I have 10 other guitars), bought on a whim...

Straight out of the box very little physical set up work was required; the walnut fingerboard has a dry feel wwhich was quickly sorted with a dose of lemon oil; the nut slots needed to be slightly widened and angled back on two strings, and some graphite rubbed into all slots; bridge height was dropped by 1/2 a turn to suite my playing style. Intonation was spot on on all strings. Once this was done I plugged the guitar in. The bridge pickup height was fine but the neck pickup was placed fairly low, giving too soft a sound for my taste - solved y 4 turns on each of the 3 screws to raise it to a height that suits me. String balance was fine on both pickups, no no need to adjust the individual pole-pieces. At this price-point I don't expect a perfect setup, but globally it was "close" - well done Gretsch and Bax !

Soundwise the Gretsch versatility is there. Through a Fender Princeton Recording with the volume pots rolled off the sound is clean and each string can be clearly heard all the way up the fretboard. Pushing the volume controls above the half way point brought in a nice degree of crunch that is not saturated - pure Gretsch! Even full volume (with master volume on full) stays in the realm of crunch rather than saturation.

On the bridge pickup there are plenty of clean jangly sounds for country or rockabilly work, but with the tone rolled of and some soft right hand work, a nice BB King blues tone is available. On the neck pickup, I found lots of interesting rythm sounds and with the tone fully backed off a nice jazz sound for comping. Mixing the pickups produced a wide range of intermediary tones, but still recognisably Gretsch.

Overall excellent value for money and IMHO underpriced. Only weak spot seems to be the tuners, but I'll give them a few weeks to settle before I considering upgraging to Gotoh or Grover.

So far I'm more than happy - in a year or so if I'm still happy I will conclude the experiment was a success and probably upgrade to a 6228 or 6229
