General

This is an upgrade of the original Fender 1956 student-model Duo-Sonic, mounted with an HS configuration. This highly unique and popular underground guitar comes with the traditional short-than-average 24-inch scale-length and a thankfully updated (and more stable) Fender 6-saddle string-through-body Strat hardtail bridge. Combined with the C profile neck and 9.5-inch fretboard radius, it offers more optimised playing comfort, excellent tuning stability and great sustain.

The Duo-Sonic HS PF: Versatile

The no-fuss single volume and tone controls on this compact Fender do much more to customise the tone of the singular sound of the Duo-Sonic than you might expect. The robust sound delivered by the humbucker mounted at the bridge can be split using the push/pull tone pot, so you can strip the configuration down to one single-coil at the bridge combined with the neck pickup. As such, this model brings a level of flexibility its 1956 forerunners could only dream of.

Wrote the following about Fender Player Duo-Sonic HS Crimson Red Transparent MN

Ik was op zoek naar een kwalitatief goede, betaalbare gitaar, maar wel met een beetje vintage uitstraling en herkenbaar geluid. In het verleden had ik altijd een beroep gedaan op Epiphone (Les Paul, Firebird), maar dat had ik wel weer gezien. Het instrument moet in dienst van mij staan en niet andersom. Daarom besloten voor een Mexicaanse Fender te gaan.

Nu zijn er behoorlijk was types/uitvoeringen, dus het is even wikken en wegen. De Mustang en Jaguar kwamen uiteraard ook langs, maar uiteindelijk werd het deze Duo-Sonic met Humbucker en Single coil pickups.

UITERLIJK
Bij de keuze speelde de kleurkeuze ook een rol. Lang, heel lang, heb ik getwijfeld over de gewenste kleur, en de beschikbare kleuren beïnvloedden ook mijn afwegingen bij de keuze van het type/uitvoeringen. Het werd uiteindelijk de Crimson Red met zwarte slagplaat en hals met toets van gelijke (lichte) kleur. Ik was even bang dat het Crimson Red wat schreeuwerig over zou komen, maar niets is minder waar. Het is een chique kleur, waar de houtnerf subtiel doorheen komt. De body van de Duo-Sonic heeft hetzelfde contour en hals als de Mustang, maar wijkt af door de vorm van de slagplaat, de bedieningsknoppen en de kop. De Duo-Sonic heeft meer weg van een Precision Bass en de Mustang meer van een Jazz-Bass. Bij de Mustang is de kop ook veel groter. Het is allebei fraai, maar de Duo-Sonic vind ik persoonlijk net iets mooier. Bij het spelen merk je er uiteraard niets van.

BOUWKWALITEIT
De bouwkwaliteit van dit exemplaar is gewoon goed. Ik heb nog wel eens Mexicaanse Fenders, of Squires in handen gehad waarbij de frets niet netjes afgewerkt waren, maar deze is dik in orde. Ook de rest van body en hals klopt gewoon helemaal. Niets negatiefs over te zeggen. Stemmechanieken lopen goed en de DS bleef al snel goed gestemd. (Dat heb ik wel eens anders gezien, helaas.) De switch voor de pickups ging even wat stroef, maar die moest er blijkbaar nog in komen en werkt nu naar behoren.

GELUID
Wow. Precies wat ik zocht. De echte Fender single-coil klank en meer. De single coils hebben altijd een specifieke twang en dat is hier aanwezig, maar met ook een Humbucker aan boord (die ook om te schakelen is naar single-coil stand) wordt het echt een erg veelzijdige gitaar. Heerlijk zuiver, geen gekraak of andere nare bijgeluiden verder. Ik ben echt onder de indruk wat deze kleine Mexicaan voor elkaar weet te boxen. Ik combineer hem met mij Vox buizencombo en dat klinkt echt lekker. Goed voor rock, surf, blues, noem het maar op.

SPEELGEMAK
De Duo-Sonic heeft de kenmerken van het oorspronkelijke studentenmodel. Slanke hals, korte mensuur en speelt daardoor erg makkelijk. Is het daardoor alleen als beginners gitaar geschikt? Nee, ik denk het niet. Het gebruik van dit soort types in met name underground muziek en bijvoorbeeld grunge bewijzen dat voldoende. Gewoon een fijne, betrouwbare gitaar.

CONCLUSIE
De Duo-Sonic is een gitaar met een goede prijs-kwaliteitverhouding. Hij ziet er goed uit, speelt goed en klinkt goed. Een echte aanrader voor beginners, maar ook voor alle overige gitaristen die eens wat anders willen.
