The Saffire Bass returns! Revived by Rapier, this classic '60s bass features various upgrades based on designs by Alan Entwistle. Featuring bold styling, the double-cutaway okoume body of the Saffire boasts a unique pickguard lay-out and helps shape a warm core sound, while the stable maple neck comes kitted out with 24 medium jumbo frets plus a zero fret, keeping the tone and playability consistent across the board.

The Saffire Bass: A Hidden Gem

The Rapier Saffire also offers the enhanced tuning stability and satisfying feel of a compensated bridge and four block saddles. Hum-free tone is taken care of by two specially-designed EWR64B low-noise mini-humbuckers by the hand of pickup expert, Alan Entwistle. These pickups can be freely isolated or combined via a 3-way pickup, while the sound is tweaked using the fitted volume and tone pots and can be pushed in terms of mid-range presence by simply flipping the mid-boost switch.

Heel fijne bas, zeker voor die prijs! Mooie look, goed afgesteld, speelt lekker vlot en heeft een heerlijk knorrige vintage sound. Zowel hoge als lage tonen komen mooi en vol tot hun recht. Ik was er meteen aan verknocht. Anderzijds is er, zoals vermeld in andere reviews, wél een probleem met de baleindes van de snaren. Die zijn kleiner dan wat je standaard vindt, dus de gaatjes achteraan de body zijn te klein voor een standaard uiteinde. Om de snaren te vervangen zijn de mogelijkheden dus allicht beperkt, of is een aanpassing nodig.

Bij de productinformatie wordt niet vermeld dat voor deze bas geen passende snaren te vinden zijn. De kraaltjes van de snaren zijn te groot voor de busjes die in deze body zijn gemonteerd. Hierover uitgebreid met Bax gecorrespondeerd, in eerste instantie geen enkele reactie, en nadat de termijn voor retourneren (!) is verlopen krijg ik na aandringen de mededeling dat er geen passende snaren te vinden zijn. Kortom, ik kan de bas niet meer retourneren. Als deze informatie bij de verkoopinformatie vermeld was, had ik deze bas nooit gekocht. Doordat Bax vervolgens niet tijdig reageerde op mijn berichten is de retourtrmijn verstreken en zit ik nu met een basgitaar waar ik niets meer aan heb als de snaren moeten worden vervangen.
