General
EDM producers have always been huge fans of devices with lots of knobs. No wonder a single glance at the Mode Machines ADX-1 analogue drum synthesizer is bound to make their hearts beat faster. Equipped with no fewer than 51 rotary encoders, this cream-coloured unit allows you to control five unique synthesizers: Bass, Synth, Snare, Hihat and Metal. The concept is reminiscent of the old drum machines from the 1980s, but each of the ADX-1's sounds features eight parameters, plus panning and volume. That's a lot more than the usual three or four you got in the eighties!
Characteristics of the Mode Machines ADX-1
The ADX-1's Metal synth allows you to produce cymbals as well as snares and other special sounds. The Bass option offers the same versatility, encompassing kick drums and toms, as well as simple bass lines. You shouldn't compare it to a bass synth like the TB-303, however, as it's mainly intended for drum sounds. With the Synth option, Mode Machines offers more than just basic sounds. This part of the instrument is based on three sine wave oscillators and uses FM synthesis to add a metallic touch. It's perfect for effects, toms and snares.
