After some forty years, Tama knows how to make a remarkable drum kit - a fact they've proven once again with the Starclassic Maple series. The Starclassic Maples use modern hardware and thin maple shells to create a warm, rich sound. This four-piece shell set consists of a 22 x 18-inch virgin bass drum, 10 x 8 and 12 x 9-inch toms and a 16 x 14-inch floor tom. Its unusual finish is called Pink Champagne Sparkle and all hardware features a black nickel-plated finish.

Sound comes first

The toms and floor toms have 6-ply maple shells, while the bass drum has an 8-ply shell. However, because the plies are thinner than usual (only 5 and 6 mm thick, respectively), the drums are just as sturdy as always, but the sound much more open. The StarCast tom mounting system also helps to achieve this sound, as it suspends the toms by their hoops and minimises contact with the shells. Add to that the special air cushioned floor tom legs, and it is clear that Tama really put sound first in designing this kit.

Shell hardware

All shell hardware looks great, thanks to the black nickel finish, but it's also designed to enhance ease-of-use. Take the Quick-Lock system, for instance. This system is applied to the toms and the floor tom, and it allows you to set up your kit much quicker. Furthermore, the die-cast zinc hoops distribute the tension evenly across the drumhead. They are aided by the rubber Hold Tight washers, which help keep the tension consistent for a long time. Finally, the bass drum claw hooks feature a rubber lining that protects the lacquered wooden hoops.
