Sonor SSE 13 Martini Turquois Galaxy Sparkle: small kit, big personality

This special edition of the Sonor Martini drum kit has 9-ply cross-laminated shells made of poplar. Besides ensuring the shells are highly durable, this also helps enhance their resonance and tone. All shells feature lugs with the TuneSafe system, which ensures that the tension rods stay firmly in place and that your drums won't go out of tune. With the included bass drum riser, you can position the beater of your bass drum pedal nicely in the middle of the bass drumhead. Furthermore, the 14-inch bass drum's hoops feature a natural finish, further enhancing the look of this retro shell set. This high-quality shell set has a remarkably attractive price tag, and it comes with Remo drumheads an a STH274 single tom holder.

Easy transportation

As the Sonor Martini in Turquois Galaxy Sparkle is a highly compact drum kit, it is easy to transport, and setting up will take but a moment. That's especially handy for touring drummers, but drummers who have limited space at home or in their car will also be quite taken with this small kit and its big sound!

Sonor SSE 13 Martini Turquois Galaxy Sparkle 4-piece shell set
Wrote the following about Sonor SSE 13 Martini Turquois Galaxy Sparkle 4-piece shell set
I bought this kit specifically to use as a practice set up at home. The space I have for my practice area is quite small, probably around 1 meter wide, so I wanted something to fit into a compact space which I wouldn’t have to pack away when not in use and set up each time I wanted to use it. This kit fits perfectly!

Regarding the size of the kit, while I am a big fan of small drum kits and already own a Ludwig Breakbeats, which incidentally is slightly too large to fit into my practice area comfortably, I was worried that this would be too small. I shouldn’t have worried, it’s great! When the kit is set up and you are sitting behind it, it really just feels like a normal sized kit. The snare and small tom feel a bit smaller bit that’s all, you get used to that quickly too. It’s set up facing the wall so I don’t see it from the front, I’m sure it still looks tiny from that angle.

I have set this up with Remo’s SilentStroke heads on it and use it with Zildjian Low Volume 13” hi hats and an 18” crash-ride. It’s such a good practice set up, I really love it. I wish these things had been about many moons ago, when I was a teenager practicing in my parent house! Practicing is now fun again.

I can’t hit real drum(heads) at home (I live in a flat), so I set this up with the mesh heads straight away so I didn’t get to play it with the real stock heads. I tapped them a bit. I suspect it would be fun to play with real heads but I think there would be a very limited tuning range. It’d probably be one of those love it or hate it type of kits. I play and practice predominantly jazz style things, it’s perfect for that, I don’t think the heavy hitting rock kids would be keen on this kit.

The finish on the kit is stunning, much better in the flesh than in photos and the quality of hardware is the standard you’d expect from Sonor, it’s really excellent. The snare strainer is a bit cheap, but for my use it makes no difference.

I wasn’t too sure about buying this at first but am so glad I did. I’ve looked out some old lesson books and started on them already. Practice is fun again, yeah!
