The Ableton controller is a textbook example of how an iconoclastic, uniquely designed bit of kit can shake up the industry and become the new standard for DJs and producers the world over. Just like Ableton did for DJs and producers, Wolfmix offer light-jockeys the opportunity to throw their classic fader-plus-software set-ups overboard. Fitted with backlit pads, this controller looks a lot like the aforementioned Ableton controller, features a 4.3" touch-capacitive colour display and, when compared to classic DMX controllers (remember those bite-sized consoles?), it's safe to say that the W1 has been designed with software in mind. For an entire generation of fresh-faced light techs, the unique workflow facilitated by the Wolfmix W1 may well become all they'll ever know.
The Wolfmix W1: Specs
The Wolfmix W1 comes loaded with four DMX ports that open up four DMX universes for a total of 2,048 DMX channels. Unless you're into pixel-screens, that's more than enough channels to keep even the most creative light-show-creator entertained. Also, the four DMX outputs are made up of two 3-pin ports and two 5-pin ports, meaning the W1 is ready to handle high-end fixtures which can then, for instance, be instructed to react to the beat of any music played back via the fitted line input. The essence, of course, remains programming and controlling shows using the Wolfmix W1. This is where the touch-screen comes in, offering a mass of options that are tweaked using the four encoders and the pads, the latter of which are lined up in four rows that match four programmable groups. To get a better idea of just how innovative and intuitive this DMX controller is, we can only recommend watching a few videos of it in use. Then again, if you're well accustomed to software, smartphones and other modern tech, odds are that the Wolfmix W1 is right up your alley.
