General

In the '80s, the heavy metal and rock scene was characterised by high gain and high distortion. If that's exactly the sound you've been yearning for the past few decades, the Mad Professor Mighty Red Distortion is your ticket home. Unlike the distortion pedals from way back when, the MRD offers a seriously improved signal-to-noise ratio and doesn't use a noise gate, which is known to cut off the sound in a highly unnatural manner from time to time. Also, by combining innovative signal-boosting technology and minimum-noise boost increments, the sound coming out of the MRD retains all of its definition and brightness - even at full-force.

Operation

Thanks to a clear lay-out and LED power indicator, operating the Mighty Red Distortion is as easy as can be. The volume and distortion controls require little further explanation, and the Presence control determines treble response without affecting the mid frequencies. Turn it to the left, and you'll end up with warm, fattened up distortion fit for tight rhythm work or, turn it to the right to enjoy deliciously screaming leads. Either way, the MRD is also well-equipped to be pushed to extreme limits using a booster or overdrive pedal.

Handwired

For the Handwired pedals, the engineers at Mad Professor use the exact same components as they do for the Factory examples. As such, the sound is identical, so you might be wondering why you should pick a hand-wired version instead. The answer's simple: all circuit board contacts have been soldered by hand and checked by Quality Control to ensure an even higher level of durability and reliability. So, if you play a lot of gigs and know your gear is prone to take a beating while on the road, go for the assurance of a Handwired pedal.
