General

For many people a dark, chic piano is the be-all end-all when it comes to digital pianos. It stands to reason then that the Yamaha YDP-162 series couldn't do without the lovely YDP-162PE--a piano as dark and chic as they come. Underneath its smooth, polished ebony exterior is the most modern technology that is sure to make a lasting impression. At its core is the sound of Yamaha's own CF3S concert grand piano, a beautiful and very expensive instrument. Playing on the weighted keys with synthetic ivory tops feels incredibly realistic thanks to the Graded Hammer Standard. Just like the other models in the 162 series, the 162PE has a larger cabinet and speakers for a deeper, warmer, more grandiose sound.

Additional features

In addition to three grands, the YDP-162PE has two electric pianos, a harpsichord, a vibraphone, two organs and strings. You can also use two voices simultaneously for all sorts of different combinations, for example piano with strings or vibraphone with harpsichord. Record your sessions with the built-in recorder. The adjustable reverb makes it sound as if you're playing in a concert hall, and since such is the home of the CF3 concert grand piano, the reverb is highly recommended. You can also grab a playing partner and get cosy on the piano bench with Duo mode, which allows you to split up the keyboard into two transposed halves so that each player has his or her own middle C. This mode is of course also ideal for piano teachers and their students--the teacher can play something and have the student repeat it without having take time out of the session to play music chairs.

Digital pianos: are they really that great?

Yes! And the further technology advances, the bigger and more resounding that "yes" becomes. Of course decades ago matters were different--lower quality, less expression. Luckily these days a digital piano is an excellent alternative to a real piano. The advantages are numerous: a digital piano is less expensive, easier to transport (especially up the stairs), and a headphone jack is available so you won't bother your neighbours. Above all, a digital piano with the sound of a grand concert piano fits easily in your home. A real piano, of course, is and will remain irreplaceable, but a digital model definitely wins in practicality and affordability.
