General
The designers at Roland challenged themselves to cram as much functionality as they could into a compact, lightweight digital piano. And they succeeded. Firstly, the FP-30, here in pristine white, is equipped with a full-size 88-key keyboard. It feels natural to the touch and is accompanied by the realistic piano sounds of the well-known SuperNATRUAL audio source. Secondly, this piano is teeming with extras, including Bluetooth functionality and a number of drum rhythms. Thirdly, it comes with a sustain pedal, and a custom-made stand as well as a 3-pedal unit are available separately.
The PHA-4: Keys, Audio Source & Effects
The tried-and-tested PHA-4 Standard Keyboard truly outdoes its predecessor, the Ivory Feel g, mostly due to its pleasant key response. For easier note repetition, it features an escapement mechanism like the kind found in grand pianos. To top it all off, the keys look as if they're made of pure ivory, which enhances the overall authentic feel even more. To sound as much like a genuine acoustic piano as possible, Roland added various effects, including one that simulates the sound of resonating strings while the sustain pedal is pressed down.
Practice & Perform
The FP-30 features several practice and performance functions. For practising, you can take advantage of the built-in metronome or one of the 8 drum rhythms. Plug in a USB stick to record and save your own piano parts as MIDI files, or to load in accompaniments as MIDI or WAV files to play along with. The Bluetooth function is especially handy. Use it to connect this piano to a recording app like Garageband, or digital sheet music viewing apps like piaScore or Sheet Music Direct. You can even set up the optionally available 3-pedal unit to turn the pages!
