Ableton satisfies a steadily growing trend in which studio producers are finally coming out and performing live. The Ableton Live 9 Standard upgrade from Live Lite OEM (download) is a great step toward turning your studio work into an artful live performance. Ableton has already been the conduit to success for many world-famous acts such as Armin van Buuren, Daft Punk, Junkie XL and more. Simply put, you use Ableton by assembling blocks of MIDI or audio data on a large matrix and then decide which to play and which not to. This process works most optimally with an Ableton controller, which we heartily recommend.

New functions in the Ableton Live 9 Standard

Transitioning from Live Lite OEM to the Standard version is a big leap forward, and is more than worth the investment. For starters, you'll get 11 GB of material consisting of 1,100 sounds that span a variety of genres. Furthermore, the sound matrix we mentioned will also benefit from the many effects -such as filters and a compressor - that you'll be able to add to it to make your productions sound professional and ready for the stage. In this version of Ableton you can either draw the effects parameters with your computer mouse or use a MIDI controller to set them up.

Who is this software for?

Ableton is surprisingly accessible, which has been a big factor in its wild popularity. Thanks to new features such as the audio-to-MIDI function, users with very little music knowledge can produce high-quality compositions. The function actually works to extract musical information from the audio, such as the pitch from vocals. In other words, if you can sing, then you can compose with Ableton! This software has gained so much popularity in the Electro genre because it’s quite similar to the structure of the genre. That doesn’t mean that you can’t create mainstream music with this package, it just requires a different method of thinking and planning. If you want to make live music on stage, then Ableton is most definitely the software for you—add an Ableton controller to the mix and the show is complete.
